Where's a maybe? I don't mind but I'd rather have them a bit more attractive.

So Yes? I can't really answer. As long as I don't see their face all the time.

Just look at Slipknot!

I can't vote because my answer is yes and no. It really depends on what you're exactly talking about. If you're refering to someone who is a musician and literally just plays an instrument for a band, then no.

Honestly, the only people who "have to be beautiful" are pop stars. Then again, only about 10%, if that, of all pop stars are musicians or let alone even write their own songs. If you're going mainstream and wanna be a pop idol, yes; looks and sexiness sells and that's all the mainstream music industry is interested in.

As long as you look good, some corporate lacky will write music that ignorant people will eat up as long as it is "by" a pretty face. Look at Birtney Spears for example. She's cute. That's it. She can't sing. She don't write music. She's just a marketable piece of music-industry ass that will make money. Same goes for Justin Bieber, Rhihanna (or however the hell you spell it), Beoynce... etc.

Now, if your a pop idol that plays a guitar, like countless other over-rated, dime-a-dozen, wannabes out there, yes. You still have to be "pretty". As long as the front man/woman is good to look at, there's a chance you can be pimped out by a record company.

Oh, and no matter how "pretty" your face is, you have to be thin to be "sexy". Name one over-weight pop icon. Didn't think so...

You don't have to be talented to be a pop star. Just look good. Corpoprate musicians will do the rest. As you may have guessed by now, I hold no respect for these "musicians".

Susan Boyle is famous because she is an exception to the rule.

Otherwise, yeah pretty much.

Nope, so long as they sound good they could look like a sentient bar stool for all I care.

I wouldn't really judge the mainstream people "musicians"
I'd barely judge them as "people".

Not to me. I plan to listen, not look.

It does to most producers, though. You have to look good on camera.
Kind of stupid, but whatever, so is everything else ever.

EDIT: You know, I'm not sure why people go on about how horrific Susan Boyle looks.
She's not that ugly. She's plain, if anything.
I can look out my window and see three people of equal attractiveness at any time.

Of course, I live in Ireland, so. Aposiopesis.
Ireland must have really low standards. Did did punching your women in a drucken rage daily catch up to them? I'm kidding of course.

OT: No, women like Susan Boyle proved that, not that being attractive is a hinderance though.

Well, based on all the music videos I've seen it sure as hell seems that way. And if they aren't they can just surround themselves with a bunch of half naked chicks or hunks.

Oh and of course merchandising. Can't get anywhere without merchandising these days. Hell, if Camilla Parker had Pepsi sponsorship, I'm sure she'd get a shit ton more positive media attention.

No. Have you seen guys like Tom Waits? And women like Aretha Franklin? If you have talent, you can be a musician.

Yet...due to our rather shallow societies, pretty women are often groomed to become pop stars. Which is unfortunate.

definitely this. She may not be pretty to the masses, but her albums are selling like hot cakes in Britain.

It is not required for musicians to be attractive. It is however required for people posing as musicians who still want to make money in the industry, in order to hold the miniscule attention span of their vapid fanbase. Hell, I don't even know what Marasy or TAM look like but I still love their work, generally because they are actually musicians instead of the superficial product of a marketing company.

I think Amy Whinehouse is proof you don't have to be. ugly disgusting crackwhore.
Woah, she's a crackwhore, but ugly? before the drugs, she was insanely attractive
I demand proof!
A before and after picture somebody posted back on page 6:
I know it's off topic, but sadly, today's media would probably ridicule the left one for her 'chunky thighs' and praise the one on the right for her dedication to her needle based diet plan.

I remain convinced that women's mags and women journalists seem to hate women even more than the majority of male journos.

As for the topic, I'm almost surprised by how well Boyle has done, except that it was all engineered from the start by Cowell to make him a few more millions, I just don't understand why he didn't do it for Michelle McManus who wasn't a bad looking, if large girl (the ultimate crime of celebrity), tho if I remember rightly, he voted against her, the public voted for her to win, then promptly refused to buy her single or album, showing that in pop you do have to conform to a certain size and look, unless you've Cowell's marketing money behind you.

EDIT: I seem to remember seeing somewhere that Winehouse has had breast implants... From the 'before' picture, she didn't need em, just needed to try eating some bloody cake again and lay off the crack. (I know quitting drugs isn't easy, but damn, just saying, she didn't need surgery, just needed to regain a healthy weight and they'd have returned to their former glory I'm sure, not that I'm obsessed with her tits or lack of, contrary to the evidence I'm typing here!)

So is it possible if you look like nothing special?
Looks have nothing to do with the possibility of someone being musically talented.

Is it possible to create a career when you don't look like Taylor Swift or one of Girls Aloud and will it make it harder for you to do that?

Or is it nothing to do with looks in the Music business and more to do with the fact that you can sing or not?
Now, in the music business, where money and marketability is generally valued over putting out good music, especially in the mainstream scene, of course looks matter. Although I think that's partially everybody's fault, we all to some degree give someone an unfair amount of attention or praise because of their looks.
