It's a bit of a loaded question. In the literal sense, only humans deserve human rights. Other species, even fairly intelligent ones simply do not seemingly possess those same traits that lead to the creation of the very concept of a right. Should one find another species that possesses similar attributes in terms of intelligence then one can extend rights to them as well, but it could no longer simply be called human rights.

As a side note, since human rights vary so wildly from culture to culture, whose model of rights are we going to use for the question?

Generally whoever is winning gets to call their rights the right ones.

So if we go by the historical model its whoever kills the most of the people they disagree with.

There are enough people who think non-white humans dont deserve human rights so I am not surprised that people say no to non-humans, its not as though human rights actually have anything in them that involves having generic human characteristics... its very much just being self-aware like we are.

So yeah, non-humans that share self-awareness like us should have the same rights.

I'd say if they were sentient and sapient, yes. If they are cows from another planet, just eat'em.

I think that animals should get certain rights. No, I don't mean the ability to vote or anything, I mean I think we shouldn't be able to just treat them however we want.
Mistreatment of animals is a crime, you know. At least in some countries, like Germany, or Russia. Don't know about other countries but I would say in the old EU-countries it's a drime, too.
I don't just mean beating them, we destroy their habitats constantly and think nothing of it.
However, most animal abuse cases go unheard of.

I just LOVE the concept of "rights". People get way to into it. Seeing as rights only exist as a concept I don't really care who has what "right". But i do hate it when people complain and say "oh you cant do this! We have rights!"...that both pisses me off and makes me giggle. I personally treat everything the same(at last i try to) If a tree is bothering me purposely then ill stab it. I've never had to do this though. I have had to actually stab people though. Since in the end everyone does what they want anyway, why live by mere concepts? it doesn't matter but as a very wise man once said to me, "If murder were suddenly made legal, everyone wouldn't go out and kill each other. Only some."

Probably been said multiple times, but no.

Animals do deserve rights as living things capable of feeling, but not equal to human rights.

Sentience should get a level of greater respect.
Non earth species is what we're talking about here. Like in District 9. You know, how it says in the first post.

But I think we should, if/when we do meet aliens, at least treat them with respect. Not only because it would be the right thing to do, but let's face it, it would be the smart thing to do.

Our species has the absolute right to establish it's dominance on it's own domain. This is our planet, we have the right to do as we wish with it and it's inhabitants, if this includes another sentient species so be it. We will grant unto them whatever we wish them to have. Just make sure they're aware who's boss around here. If they don't like it, they can leave, since clearly they have the tech.

It kind of doesn't matter.
Seeing as there are none.
(Sentient non-humans, I mean.)
(Well, at least not sentient in the way we are...)
how do you know? i mean there are so many planets in a solar system and so many solar systems in a galaxy and err...how many galaxies are there? what are the chances of us being the only planet in existence to have intelligent life?
Bolded for you.

Chances are, there is other intelligent life.
Chances are, even if we find them, we would never be able to communicate with them.

They probably wouldn't even have a language as we could understand it.
yes,i did read your post i just disagreed with it.surely that isnt that hard to grasp.i only said that you cant know that (bolded for you)

Well certainly the answer is in the question.

Do non-humans deserve human rights?

Well non-humans deserve their own rights!
