If I could insert something into this arguement, human cultures separated by natural formations developed just as differently as our culture would from an alien culture, (The cultures in, for sake of example, Asia and Africa, developed very differently, with different views on life, spirituality, sexuality, etc.) and yet when the cultures were brought together, we were able to find a standard medium for all humans.

So, who's to say that once our culture interacted with an alien culture, a standard medium would not be found?

For that matter, who's to say that a native of another planet wouldn't still be fundamentally human. Sure, the planetary differences would create some anatomical anomalies, but their physiology could be close enough to ours to declare them "human" (Kind of like how you can have a great white shark and a hammerhead shark. Both very different, and yet similar enough to both be considered sharks.)

And on an unrelated topic, why does everyone always assume the aliens will find us? Who's to say we won't end up finding a way to their planet first. And we'll be the aliens.

Most humans don't deserve said rights :)
That's a bit low, wouldn't you rather say something like "a lot" of humans?

And I'd say give them the basic rights. Don't kill them unless they're killing us, and so on...
Also, we need to change this "Human Rights" stuff in due time to "Sentient rights."

I think as long as they are sentient and peaceful, they deserve every right we have. Who knows, they may change our world for the better!

The whole concept of rights is stupid. You think just because you are human or sentient you have a right to anything? I'm sorry, but you don't. Whatever rights you think you are entitled to are irrelevant. Just because you think you have them dosn't stop people breaking them.
Do you live somewhere in the Capital Wasteland by any chance?

Yes, if their not here to kill us and are friendly they deserve rights we shouldn't treat them differently.

Rights don't really exist, anyways. Remember internment camps in the US during WW2? The "rights" you have are completely dependent on what the guys with the power have to say.

If we ever meet an intelligent non-human, we can be certain the public will never have any real say on what their "rights" will be.

I think the biggest challenge would be interaction between the two groups. So long as neither one tried to impose their views on the other, it would be fine. Both would be allowed their rights.

If they were visiting us - they aren't allowed to breach the near universal human codes of conduct:
-murder
-rape
-theft

We would have to learn about their customs and seek to avoid breaching theirs.
-no flushing micro-organisms
-no meat on the 25th thursday of a galactic month.
-remember that a punch is the face IS an appropriate greeting.

not HUMAN rights, since they aren't human. By this I mean you do have to take into account inter-species differences. The buggers (Ender's Game reference!) obviously wouldn't need individual rights for the non-queens, nor would they ever even contemplate such a concept.

However, basic inter-species rights such as "species self-determination" (xenocide is wrong) are to be respected. More detailed rights would have to result from a case-by-case discussion between the involved species e.g. Ender, Human, and the Hive Queen in Speaker for the Dead. However, I would be inclined to take on Douglas Adams' opinion since Hitchhiker's Guide occupies the highest level of authority in the sci-fi canon, but sadly he's pretty inconsistent/silent on this question so I revert to the Ender series.

Edit: And to clarify one loose end, all of this is bound by the assumption that 1. communication is possible between the species, and 2. both species are sentient. If one or both of these two conditions aren't met, then essentially a "self-defense" law would take hold in which no acts of aggression would be permitted but defensive actions in response to an actualized threat would be perfectly permissible.

Incase you don't know, humans are animals too. We just THINK we're special.

If they are here to Destroy/Enslave us then no but so long as they are just here for a cup of Joe and a hot slice of apple pie they should be able to do as they please.

In the future when we get intelligent machines, men and machines combined, etc etc, we will have to make a new rule which grants human rights to all conscious beings.

I wasn't being 100% serious there mate (these forums are for recreation, not my job, after all), but I do agree that changing it to "sentient rights" could be an improvement.

I think that animals should get certain rights. No, I don't mean the ability to vote or anything, I mean I think we shouldn't be able to just treat them however we want.
