All I have to say can be summed up in this picture:

Anyway...

No, they do not deserve human rights.

No siree bob.
What's up with that spider, it's only got 7 legs?

Just read that.
I have, I thought it would be funny if... If I did the whole 'seven legs' thing.
*Sigh*
Wait, you already read it? And wanted to go through the routine? Sorry.

I think that's the point of the picture (but only for this thread) .
It lost a leg, but the spider smiles.

Wow, looking at it that way, now that spider makes a little sad. Poor guy, only got one leg but he carries on like a little trooper...

Human Rights for Humans
Sentient Being Rights for other Sentient Beings
Animal Rights for Animals
uh...Kitchen Appliance Rights for Kitchen Appliances?
Makes sense. I actually have a friend who thought about raping kitchen appliances and other weird things like cheese. After that, I really started getting interested in their rights. IMO, they should not be raped without punishment.

I'm sure we would give them Alien Rights, but people would still want to give them Human Rights, even though Alien Rights is just as good. Eventually humans would want to marry them. Killing an Alien would be viewed as worse than killing a human. People wouldn't go out of their way to donate money to humans that are dieing, but will donate hundreds of dollars to save an alien because it is cute. Basically the same thing PETA is trying to do when they are not sock cucking eachother.

I don't believe we should force our rights on them, but i do believe they should be treated "humanly"

This is the District-9 question. Do non-humans deserve human rights? The question applies to extra-terrestrial species, not other species native to Earth.
What do you think?

I personally think it would be wrong to impose human moral standards and rights on a species that is utterly alien. As demonstrated by Orson Scott Card in Speaker for the Dead. The Piggies and the Fromics (buggers) have completely different views on life and death and personal rights. Piggies ritualistically kill themselves to reproduce, and they killed humans because they believed the same was true for us. The right to be killed by a close friend is very dear to them. The same is not true for humans.
I suggest you change it to "do aliens deserve human rights?" because you're going to have random PETA fags not reading and mindlessly clicking yes because they think you mean animals.

But seriously though PETA, if we weren't meant to eat animals, they wouldn't be made of meat.

If aliens came to earth and they weren't pointing their disintegration rays at us they should have every right a human has, imo.

Are you referring to District 9?
If so, yes, Prawns should have all the rights people do. Are you referring to animals? No. I really dont think a rabbit needs the right to an attourny.

Edit: O.K. just re-read the post. Yea, Prawns deserve rights.

Cheers to district 9, my new favorite movie!

The whole concept of rights is stupid. You think just because you are human or sentient you have a right to anything? I'm sorry, but you don't. Whatever rights you think you are entitled to are irrelevant. Just because you think you have them dosn't stop people breaking them.

First off knowing that there are no inherent human rights that exist. If we did meet another species who were intelligent it would probably be changed to "People" which could include the extra-terrestrials. Even human privledges differed vastly between countries upon our whole planet since the dawn of humanity. But as countries started becoming more closely related within the "Global Villiage" we started to take the best ideas from certain views on the subject to form something more universal. This would also apply to interplanetary affairs if they should ever come about.

Why don't we ask them how they believe they should be treated, and treat them as such? Everybody's happy that way.

I think that any sentient extra-terrestrial lifeforms should be allowed rights equal to our own, if they so desire them. However, one thing that should be taken into consideration is what exactly counts as sentience. One species may have an entirely different idea of sentience, or their mental capacities may be beyond human comprehension. Either way, it really comes down to if they desire to be considered equals.

I also noticed many people have decided that hostility would prevent them from receiving rights. The one thing I find to be really odd about this is the consideration of an entire sentient race being hostile to us humans.

As a final note, I would like to add that we're all aliens to aliens.

a new set of rights would be needed though basic sentient freedom is a must any other such right should be negotiated from there.
