If we were to find intelligent life that isn't human then we would have to work together to rewrite our moral code. We would be giving each other rights, but they wouldn't be 'human' rights.

If you can even consider the question, you deserve human rights.

Unfortunately, most animals will never qualify(unless they evolve).
But aliens and sentient androids will.
Yeah. this is what I'm falling behind.

Why is there no depends option. What if the aliens came here and started blowing us up? because if the aliens come and start blowing shit up, I don't quite think they should have human rights. besides we should give seperate rights that are similar that are strangely called Alien rights.

No, but if we ever find a intelligent aliens, then yes, they deserve it. Now all we have to do is find one.

No.

They would most likely have their own thoughts on such things, and we would be stupid to try and make them change.

EDIT: Well, if we're talking about self-aware androids built by us, yeah. They would probably think more like us, and would be logical enough to not misuse having equal rights.

As I have been eagerly anticipating District 9, I'll throw my two cents into this.

Human rights are, as of now (in a world where we have no concrete proof of aliens), designed for human beings. As soon as a giant space ark from across the galaxy comes by to take residence, someone has to add a few things to those rights. Now, some people will want to define more particularly the word "human", but I say there is no point in doing that because it leads to a load of Blade Runner semantics that we don't need. We already know what human means. It means "bipedal lifeforms from planet Earth".

The laws governing basic human rights, in the case of alien refugees or something (assuming the MiB hasn't already taken care of it), should be edited to cover "the rights of legal citizens of Earth", allowing the term of human to broaden to those of foreign beings who can obtain the proper papers and legally consider themselves immigrants to our own terra firma. Once they're put through the process, no person on this planet has the right to argue with their presence.

I personally don?t believe that human rights should be applicable to every human much less other species.

So-called ?rights? like the right to vote, and especially the right to procreate should be reserved for those who show willing to work and contribute to society. This is the only effective way to put a permanent end to the parasitic ?I would go so far as to call them a developing sub species- that sponge from the state and the taxpayer, never seek to better themselves, and worse, raise generation after generation of children who just go on to replicate the cycle.

If they can think for themselves then I'd suppose they deserve human rights.

But going with past human nature, they'll only be given it by the government if they're attractive.

This is the District-9 question. Do non-humans deserve human rights? The question applies to extra-terrestrial species, not other species native to Earth.
What do you think?

I personally think it would be wrong to impose human moral standards and rights on a species that is utterly alien. As demonstrated by Orson Scott Card in Speaker for the Dead. The Piggies and the Fromics (buggers) have completely different views on life and death and personal rights. Piggies ritualistically kill themselves to reproduce, and they killed humans because they believed the same was true for us. The right to be killed by a close friend is very dear to them. The same is not true for humans.
Some people seem to be taking the term human rights in a much too literal way. And the term "human rights" to me means for someone or something to be treated in a specific way. You dont have to be human to have human rights and if there were aliens on earth the term human rights could apply.

Although who's human rights will they be having cos they vary from country to country??
Piggies and Buggers, my fellow Escapist. Piggies and Buggers. Would force human rights on them? That in its own right would be inhumane. They need rights specific to themselves. If you haven't read Speaker for the Dead, I suggest you wikipedia it so you know what I am talking about.

In the face of sapient non-human races the idea of 'human' rights would have to evolve into sapient rights. Humanity has nothing to do with it, it has to do with the ability to perceive injustice.

So yes, non-humans would deserve human rights.
