Any sentient creature deserves rights, I really don't understand why most people here say they don't.
Pretty much what I believe, though I'm not sure if rights are necessarily the same as human rights.

Aliens should be given the same rights that we give a human being, as well as their own rights (if they do not clash), assuming they are sentient.

Aliens should be expected to bear our and their responsibilities, to respect our rights and so on, when in our space. With comprimises made if needed of course.

And vice versa for us to them.

And, in a case of first contact, my guess is that we would cut off contact in fear and begin mass moblisation of planetary defenses, before tentitively letting scientists communicate.

Odds are, If you can transport though space, There probably is a Galatic Code that most Intelligent Beings require to hold inorder to begin intergalaxtic trading. War ethics, Standards of rights and what not.

Yes.

You have no reason to automatically assume that aliens are evil. They're innocent until proven otherwise.

This is the District-9 question.
The movie looks excellent, although we won't get it til next month here in UK land :(

Anywho... I think it depends now how different from us they are; and further, it depends on if our concept of rights translates into their conscious model. In theory, I say yes, they should - or at least, the principle of individuals (or in the case of a collective type species, the individual super orgasmisms) have the right to life, freedom, and all that jazz.

As long as they are not shooting at me or are planning to shoot me. They can has rights. But only if they treat us as equals too.

Think of it this way everyone- What has happened every single time in our history when an advanced civilization meets a primitive one? They exploit them to an extreme. What's to stop an extra terrestrial civilization from doing it to us? If we don't think they should have rights, why would they think WE should? I think the golden rule should apply here. If we meet an inferior civilization we could score galactic karma
Actually, in most cases the 'advanced' (misnomer) society gave the 'primitives' (misnomer) new diseases to reduce their population - if it weren't for smallpox, the Spanish wouldn't have conquered South America.

With aliens, it seems unlikely that their diseases will transfer over to us. Further, in the recent years, we've being preventing ourselves from interfering with primitives yet to encounter the rest of humanity (amazingly, their still are some in South America).

So, maybe we'll be lucky in the event of alien contact and they'll want trade, peace, and all that jazz.

There Rights should be dictated by their customs and by the customs of their host country/planet/galaxy/whatever. i.e. If they wanna kill people cause of their traditions it only works if it doesn't violate the laws of that host country/etc.

EDIT: As to whether they deserve it? Yes. Does that make a difference if conflict ensues? No.

Sure, if they settle down on earth.
Don't see a problem with giving them rights.

They deserve rights, maybe even a lot of the same rights that we have but I wouldn't call them human rights, due to the lack of human in them.

I would say give them their natural born rights. Human rights are for humans.

Or we could just treat them fairly and not repress them, thats a good option to.
