Maybe not exact human rights, but all sentient beings deserve basic protections.
If we deprive them of there rights on Earth theirs the large chance that they will seize those rights by force.
Plus theirs the likelihood that there a thousand times more advanced than we are. Try enslaving them.

When we encounter intelligent life (From a lab or another planet) we'll probably change Human-Rights to Sentient-Rights.

I assume you meant self-aware species when you said Aliens. Unless you want us respecting bacteria on Mars and the like...

It depends, first of all though, the wording is a little tricky, we say 'deserve' as if we'll have any choice in the matter. If it's a less technologically advanced race, from our point of view it would be morally wrong to take advantage of another fully sentient species.

If it's the other way around, with us meeting a more advanced species, it will be on -their- terms as to our interactions. So, in that case, let's hope they're friendly eh? ^^'

I'd say that non-humans who are sentient like humans should have what we call human rights. Human rights don't (or at least shouldn't) exist because we're human, they should exist for the good of sentient beings.

For examples of non-humans who'd deserve human rights, many intelligent sci-fi aliens and the Wolkenritter are good examples.

If aliens came down to earth do i think we should allow them basic civil rights? Yes. Only if they were willing to live within some civil constraint though and didn't say- harvest our brains for experiments.

I barely think most humans deserve rights, so definitely not non-human animals (yes, humans are animals, get over it).

Of course they should have rights. Maybe their rights should be more customized towards their lifestyles, but I don't think they should be segregated or mistreated ala District 9. I mean, what would you guys who voted no do to Mr. Spock or Chewie?

I think the case would be more of a diplomatic immunity then human rights because if they can get to earth more then likey they are more technologicly advanced then us and should be treated as members of another country would be. So yes i belive that we should give them their rights.

If you can even consider the question, you deserve human rights.

Unfortunately, most animals will never qualify(unless they evolve).
But aliens and sentient androids will.

id say that there should be 2 basic sets of rights for each species such as for humans that would be Sentient rights and human rights though of course some of the sentient rights might get over ridden by the species rights since you cant be sure that a new species will be able to live withing the Sentient rights

that being said a alien species lands on earth i think we should help them get home as long as they share their tech with us

No they shouldn't. I doubt we'd find out too, we'd kill them so fast we wouldn't have time to put morals to them. Personal opinion of how fucked up humans are right now.

...So why even bother coming here at all? are you trolling or something?
Your quote had nothing to do with what i posted, and that's why I don't care.
I believe that you called me a scientologist for trying to pull ethics out of scifi. I provided you with an example of a sub genre of scifi that is specifically designed to have morals and big questions and issues pulled from it. Ergo, I posted an answer and legitimate response to your question.

This is the last time I will bother responding to you.

"Non-humans" basically poses the question to me as, "do imaginary creatures deserve human rights?"

It's not that I believe aliens are infeasible, it's just that it's such a variable that the question can't be answered. If the non-humans in question are unable to resist gobbling us up, it's sort of hard to want to protect them because we're busy protecting ourselves from them. Maybe the non-humans in question are completely psychologically incompatible with the idea of having rights, and granting them rights reads as some kind of death sentence to them?

So, it's a pretty ambiguous question, overall.

Yes it would be wrong to impose human morals and rights but to not allow them to have them if they choose to try to integrate into human society would be no better than apartheid.

Since people keep preaching about animal rights, I don't see why aliens and other such life-forms shouldn't have rights.
