Poll: Do people still read comic books?

first off, let me just say that I this is not about bashing comic books, its merely to help fix my own ignorance of the subject

I often go to <link=http://www.thatguywiththeglasses.com>ThatGuyWithTheGlasses.com (if you haven't been there yet, you should check it out), one show on the site that I've never really watched was Atop the Fourth Wall, because, I don't read comicbook. frankly, when I think about it, I can't think ever seeing a single person in my life read a comicbook. Even when i picture comic books in my mind, much of the time its stuff like <link=http://superdickery.com/index.php?Itemid=45&id=28&layout=blog&option=com_content&view=category>this. So, do people actually still read comicbook?

Edit: also, when i say comic books, i am not refering to japanese manga

i read a lot of comic books, though almost none of them are superhero comics. lots of DC-Vertigo stuff, some manga, etc.

Yep, a whole bunch. But I have't bought any new issues since last summer. I like Thor, The Avengers and Deadpool

I personally don't but I know some people who do. I never found them worth getting into and I think that Yahtzee's analogy in his DC universe online thing was quite apt. You need to read a couple hundred books of back story just to have an idea what's going on!

If I had to read any kind of comic, it would be a manga. Simply because they are pretty much contained in their own series, while things like Marvel and DC has such a large universe for a lot of their characters that it's quite impenetrable for newcomers.

Yeah. Not a lot, but on occasion. Also AT4W is a brilliant show even if you don't read comics. It's one of my favourite shows on the site.

Yes I read a fair amount of comic books, but most of them is European comics.

i dont think i have ever read a comic book. the only comics i read are the strips in news papers next to the sudoku and crosswords.

I'm still looking at getting the whole Neil Gaiman Swamp Thing series, but comics are just too expensive for me.

I got The Watchmen for like $20 just before the movie came out and I loved it. I've got the first two Sin City's around here somewhere too, but again, they're like $20 a piece!

So I guess I read comics? I'm certainly not a weekly reader, but when I do find myself with the disposable cash I enjoy sitting down with one.

O hell yeah.
Though I'm not a big fan of American super hero comics or Japanese manga.

What I do like, are comics like:
- Blacksad
- Thorgal
- Aria
- Jaguar
- A whole bunch from Collection Charlie.
- Short series like Roxalane, Children of the Salamander and The Quest for the Time-Bird (a true marvel, that one).
- The Chninkel
- And pretty much everything by François Boucq - that dude's a freakin' genius.

And quite a few webcomics too, actually...

yeph, mostly game tie in's or star wars, I gave up super hero comics when they started turning even the most lame into summer blockbuster, turn your brain off now, movies.

though I did sell my sin city and spirit comics about two years ago at quite the profit!

plenty of western comic book series are pretty self-contained; see: most things vertigo, image, icon, idw, boom! etc. put out. i understand what you're saying about format (and that most conventional western comics series still initially do single issue format, even if it's intended to be a single narrative with a set end point) but there have been some great graphic novels and limited-run (short, easy-to-follow) series that've come out in the last decade or so. if you're interested, i'd suggest checking out parker, chew, unwritten, loveless, incognito, irredeemable, criminal, unknown soldier, a lot of the classic batman trades/one-offs (or pretty much anything non-continuity dc or marvel put out, like marvel zombies) along with anything by charles burns, chris ware, daniel clowes and so on and so forth.

The only reason I stopped reading comics was because I couldn't afford it. I have too many interests, and I just love games and music more.

Sometimes, but many are too over... a lot of things (the top, involved, -ly exaggerated, enthusiastic, -ly stupid, etc.). I prefer the subject matter of graphic novels and Manga, but even within those there are genres I won't touch. I get most of my comics over the internet, where there are indie people willing to cater to people like me.

I don't personally, I used to but I quickly got bored of them and chose novels instead. I like to read, and the illustrations didn't really keep me interested after I had grown to about 10 years of age.

I do know a few people who do keep up with the Marvel and DC universes though.

No, comic books like Donald Duck or X-men quit being intresting around when I hit the age of 12. I do read manga, but not because I'm intrested in it. Books are too heavy for my low concentration skills and we got tons of manga at home since my sister loves them.

I do consider manga to be comic books though...

I've read manga from time to time. The closest I've gotten to reading one was a digital version of the L4D comic (which was awesome!)
