No but a lot of people like to make the connection while ignoring the obvious connection with violent people they seek out violent material. For example the book American Psycho along with the movie was owned by a couple who were serial killers. To be honest someone who has violent tendencies looks for material for inspiration and to try to keep the their feelings internalized unfortunately these psychotics tend to spin out of control the more violent material they take in which does the opposite of the original reason they tried to keep it under wraps.

I think that if someone is influenced by video games to preform violent acts has something wrong with them, I'd assume that most people know how to tell the difference between reality and fantasy....

For me, it's just the opposite. Playing violent games stops me from doing it IRL.
I love you for this. Violent games are super cathartic.

That's a very good statement about the reality of violent media and violent people.

Most people with psychopathic and disorders that lead to violent behavior become obsessed with various forms of violent expression. This includes video games and other media. Of course, most criminology studies seem to take a backwards approach to finding motive to violent crimes, so they look at ALL prior behavior and account for it as a CAUSE.

Lately, however, the official APA position has been pushing criminology and other law enforcement groups to not immediately point the finger at violent media as a cause, but a sign that a person was experiencing a psychopathic or violent break. It's important to understand what can trigger a person to go over the edge, but it's rarely the media they take in. It's usually a real-life event.

Also, teenage violence is partially a physiological and a mental problem. Bad parenting will fail to recognize the onset and help the teen. Furthermore, the bad precident of allowing people to blame their problems on violent media is causing problems (I call it the "Pass the Buck" syndrome of my generation - since no one takes accountability for anything any more, people assume it's okay to not take responsibility for their actions) with kids who have a hard time assuming consequences go with action.

And the person who said their professor and students blamed violent media in their sociology class about deviance - you need to inform your professor to go read the recent findings by the APA on the cycle of violence and the consumption of violent media. He should not be concretely telling you that violent media is proven to cause violent behavior.

Printed on the inside of a CD sleeve of one of my favourite bands;
"A warning for those of you lazy self absorbed and/or just plain inattentive parents: All the censorship in the world won't make up for bad parenting. If your child is more influenced by our music than by Mommy & Daddy, both you and your offspring have much bigger problems than our lyrics. So before you go hauling us or any other artist into court, look yourself in the mirror and ask yourself if you did the best you could, because if you're considering taking us to court, you didn't."

Goes for gaming as well as music as basically any form of free time spending.

Simple Answer Jack Thompson is a idiot. If your kids can't tell the difference between GTA 4 on the xbox 360 and the real world then keep it away from them. If they can let them have it

I think those traits are contributed to by something more important than gaming.

a complete lack of parenting, enforcing, structuring of kids. Though YES that nature is natural " though arguably on a much smaller scale" naturally... it's only exacerbated by the utter lack of real parenting skill I see these days.

So where was that data actually from? I'm assuming those numbers are for the U.S.A., right?
I found that chart on a low poly art forum. When someone asked the guy who osted it where he found it, this is what he replied.

Crime data is from the FBI website
Game data is from.. I think moby games or a similar site.. I forget and apparently I forgot to properly annotate it as I originally made the chart as a half joke on how poor statistical modeling can imply things that aren't really there, and to reinforce the idea that correlation does not equal causation.
