I'm an avid gamer but I play games to have fun, not to be labeled as hardcore. I'll play some games on the hardest difficulty at times either because a) I found that my previous playthrough was a bit too easy b) I suffered a brain hemorrhage and want to be suicidal or c) I want those watching to laugh at my failures.

Hmm, well I have a full time job, train most days of the week, have a son to entertain and care for and a house I've recently moved unto to decorate, I'd say being a hardcore gamer right now isn't a concern of mine. The only real distinction I think there should be in gaming his amateur and professional, because ones doing it for fun and the other does it for a living, which might take the fun out of it..

ive been playing video games for 33 years so yeah before the term gamer or hardcore gamer existed. i play and like games nothing more complicated than that.

honestly i think the whole hardcore vs casual thing is damaging we all know of people who wont even attempt games they might actually like purely because its "casual" for instance.

@wombat_of_war while I can't match your record, I've been playing for about a decade and a half. I had never heard "hardcore" and "casual" until recently. I agree we (you, me, a lot of other people) just play games. There really isn't a reason to complicate matters more. And playing only one type of games (hardcore/casual) is just plain stupid. I won't mind if what one likes does fall into only one of the categories, but it shouldn't be because of the label of the category.

I play games to have fun on my free time, i don't care about labels. I'm not even sure what a 'hardcore gamer' is supposed to be, perhaps something similar to alcoholic or a drug addict? The kind of person who spends 16 hours per day playing games living in his parents basement.

Not really. I just enjoy playing what I find entertaining.
I think the only thing you would need to classify when talking with other people who play games is what types of game they play for the sake of conversation. If someone only really plays RPGs, you're probably not going to have a long talk about things you did in Halo or Max Payne with them.

I upset that I'm having trouble playing more than WOW atm because I'm seriously ill. Anything more intense and I have to go and have a lie down. I feel chronically EMBARRASSED about it.

When someone called me that, because I used to enjoy playing at least all weekend, it kind of made me sad. Like all I was doing with my freetime was playing videogames when I had a backlog of books, tv shows, and other stuff I wanted to do. It made me try to cut down on my gaming consumption.

And then ME2 came and that went out the window.

The issue is in the definition.
Is hardcore defined by hours played daily?
Years of service?
Which games you play?

Frankly, I'd say if you are a member of a video game based community, there is a good chance that you're hardcore.
That being said, I wouldn't call myself hardcore. Just enthusiastic.
