Yes most games are sequels so all the time. There are some games where it's necesarry to play the original (Metal Gear Solid 4) but most are fine.
Fallout 3 - Never played 1 or 2
Final Fantasy 7 to 10 - Although i have now played 1, 2, 3 at the time i've still not played 4-6

I got Kingdom Hearts 2, Halo 2, and Assassin's Creed 2 without beating the first game in each series.
Played AC1 from about an hour, didn't like it, but then bought AC2. Also, Oblivion, Fallout 3, Condemned 2 (yet now bought Condemned 1 before even getting around to playing 2), Final Fantasy VII-XIII, AoE2, Doom 3, Half-Life 2 (actually bought HL2:Ep1 on sale before I even played HL2 - that was confusing to play), and a lot more...
Only twice that I can recall; Jak 2 and Killzone 2. Had to do a little bit of backstory reading to figure out the gist of things.
Oh and to everyone saying Fallout 3 or any FF game; those don't count, they're all completely self contained stories with completely different characters, so there's nothing in the previous games that affects your understanding of the sequel.

Most of the games that people are citing here are not true sequels.
Fallout3, Oblivion, Final Fantasy XIII, none of these are true sequels to their preceding games. They are all stand-alone titles in terms of storyline.
An actual game sequel needs to be a continuation of the story.
With that said, I don't play the sequels in case I get hopelessly lost.

Nope. The only times I got games out of order was when I was a little boy and my dad would get me random games.
I did it with Kingdom Hearts II. Also with Soul Calibur II. I can't really think of any others.

Any PC bought within the past 7 or 8 years can run HL1. That, with the fact that Valve runs 99 cent sales on it every other day makes it pretty much a must play game.LordCuthberton said:
