Only in games like Bayonetta and Super Smash Bros. Otherwise I like to play as a guy to feel more immersed into the game's story.

All the time. If you are gonna look at the back of a character for hours and hours it might as well be a chick right? Then you can observe the ass jiggle physics and critique them in your dirty little mind. I know a lot of people do it on Mass Effect. Lesbian Sex scene anyone?

I did it in Fallout 3 just to see what would happen, same as Mass Effect. I don't get off on it, if you know what I mean, but it is interesting to know that games have diffrent dialog for diffrent genders.

Since male characters equipment generally looks like dog vomit by comparison, and video game girls are almost exclusively thin, buxom and beautiful, I almost exclusively play as female characters if given an option. To me, it comes down to this - would I rather stare a guy's ass during all day gaming sessions, or a female's? The choice to me is clear. Also, I dont personally see a videogame character as any sort of extension of me like some of you do.

On another note, does anyone else find it irritating when people complain about videogames objectifying women? I find the argument completely irrelevant since even if it did objectify the character, it would only be objectifying something that is itself an object, so frankly, who cares?

hmmm... I have played as the opposite gender in a couple different games. Mainly it depends on the role I play, but it also depends on the visual appeal. If a normally male protagonist is less visually appealing (like say space-goats from WoW) then I would play the female one.

On an off-topic note: I would so play as Zelda/Sheik/Tetra if they ever made her the chief protagonist for once. It would just be awesome-sauce.

In a few I believe, but the only one coming to mind right now is Pokemon Crystal, and that's because it was the first in the series to let you do so.

Don't mind me. I'll just sit over in the corner being pissed off like hell.

I guess the expiration of threads on the Escapist is about a day.

I often play as the female version in games. As a male, I figure that I must act as I should. As a female, I can act differently because it's not me. A strange technicality but I also like looking at something beautiful for the entire game in opposition to someone I feel I'm supposed to identify with.
Interesting. I tend to feel that I should be nice to other characters as a female but as a male I can be indifferent or cruel more often. I do have some good guy characters as well, but I don't have many female villain characters-even if I mean them to be when I start them out. Hmm, interesting bit of introspection.

(This poster is male)

It depends on the game. For RPGs, I tend to play as a male character first, mostly because I like playing as someone I'd like to be. If I get around to a second playthrough, I'll play as a female character, just to see the differences. On the other hand, the vast majority of my custom characters in Soulcaliburs 3 and 4 are female. I suppose, basically, if my choice will follow me through the game, I play as male.

For any kind of rpg player I'd think it stranger to have NOT played the opposite gender. I mean the difference is usually cosmetic so what's the harm.

In Mass Effect and Baldur's Gate, yes, after having played through as a male. In most other games, no.

In MMO's, absolutely not.

I usually make similar characters to myself unless I find something hilarious. For Example I made a character on Fallout 3 with a hot pink mohawk and musketeer goatee.

I always play as a male character, probably because I'm more used to them. I now have the "perfect male protagonist" image in my head, which I've been using in every game with a character creation. I just happen to make and play better male characters than female ones.

I sometimes do. However, I always play a male on my first run through the game. If its good enough for a 3rd or 4th play through, thats usually when I give the female side ago to see if their's anything new in there side of things - the latest one I've given this ago in was Mass Effect 2.
