All the time.

...well, half the time (I always make multiple characters), but in any game where it's possible.

yes...

Simplest reasons in video games is I have to look at the avatar most times, why not have something that is pleasant to my eyes?

In other RPs... no comment.

Hell yes! I usually make my first round character's females just cause I find them more attractive? It's probably a result of my virginity ;D. Though, it's usually because I'd rather play as myself as a male (especially if all the make characters look like douches). But it depends on the game, in KOTOR I I always played this bald guy I thought looked badass, but then I found there weren't any builds in KOTORII that appealed to me so I always chose that Asian build with nice hair...

In ME2, I always chose a male to play soldier-esque classes! :D Though right now I'm using a Female Vanguard.

If I get the choice for a male character, he'd better look manly. I'm vain. :'(

It depends on the game for me.
In Fallout 3 i play a female character because of the black widow perk, being that most enemies are men its pretty much just a constant 10% damage buff.
In World of Warcraft i had both male and female characters. I had a male deathknight and a male paladin because i thought they looked badass however i also player a female druid and a female warlock just because i thought it suited them better.

I alternate gender every time I ascend in Kingdom of Loathing. Funnily enough, this has resulted in always my character's "equipment" always matching the constellations in the Hole in the Sky. (Loathingarians will understand that last sentence.) I also usually play a girl if I starting over on a Pokèmon game. It's something of a nonissue for me. I even have what amounts to an imaginary friend who's partially composed of my Jungian anima.

For me it has nothing to do with the often said 'If I'm going to stare at a character's ass for hours on end, it might as well be one I enjoy looking at' but everything to do with experiencing the game differently.

In most wprg (Kotor 1 & 2, Fallout 1 & 2 & 3, Mass Effect 1 & 2, Fable 1 & 2, etc) I usually play once as a Male 'good guy' (paragon, light side, whatever) and than my second playthrough will be a female 'evil girl' (renegade, dark side, whatevcer). This allow me to experience more of the game.

Since I'm a guy and I like to think I usually do the right thing, the first game usually represent 'me', while the second is the 'anti-me'... than again, maybe I have some screwd up mental issue about woman being evil 0_o.

In game where you're allowed to pick a gender but your gender has no effect on gameplay/story what-so-ever (such as World of Warcraft), I usually play male characters, very rarely females.

yes, if I'm going to be staring at someone's butt all day, it may as well be an attractive one.

Whenever given the choice, I choose to play as a female character every here and there. But I love to play female characters in fighting games, always faster then normal characters.

No. I am forced to play men so often in the games with no choice. There aren't enough female protagonists in games as it is, so when I get the chance, I choose the fems all the way.

My characters are me, rather, they're a much less morally inhibited me. Fallout 3, Oblivion, (especially oblivion) my character was a male dark elf, a sort of backstabbing serpent of a man, routinely sneaking into peoples shops to nick all their stuff then sell it back to them a few days later. It's like the person I can't bring myself to be. And it makes role playing that much better.

So, in a word. No.
