It takes a hate for a character or phone numbers with a money sign in front of it for me to be despicably evil in a game, otherwise the good paths tend to be the most rewarding... property, weapons, etc.

Being an asshole/epic dick: Fine.
Being evil: :(

I felt bad for killing the chief of the guards in Oblivion... especially since his corpse never vanished. Same for the granny whom I was supposed to be buying presents for.

I just can't bring myself to attack people who don't have a chance of retaliation if I do.

Now, I went on several bloody rampages through npc rich towns in the fable games but I had to really force myself to do it...

And yes, I was laughing maniacally while doing it.... but that's beside the point! :p
It was a lot of fun, but it's at best a quick cheap thrill.

I find it hard to be actively a heartless asshole... unless I've been at work that day. Then I can depopulate entire regions.

I always play the good guy, always. For Mass Effect, a game which I have played through more than seven times, I have never successfully played a Renegade character. I just can't do it. I'm just far too nice in games, not so in real life, however.

In terms of video games, I don't often get a chance to be evil. Acting, however; that's another kettle o' fish. I am the baddie! Salieri, Curley, Iago, Lovelace...you name it.

Though i have no problem going on killing sprees and being an asshole in any GTA game...

I try to be as neutral as possible. I find it really difficult to roleplay a nasty character, for whatever reason. It just doesn't make sense in a lot of cases.
For example, the Renegade options in Mass Effect all seem to have a distinctly pro-human bent, which just rubs me the wrong way.

I can play evil pretty easily. My biggest problem iwth "good" and "evil" in games is how often the choices or the status is just stupid. A lot of games approach morality as a way to just milk a second playthrough out. I'd rather play a role, and sometimes that role is a saint, and sometimes that role is a sociopath.

I'm not constrained by applying my own morality to video games. They're fictional people part of a world that is at best interactive storytelling and at worst a time waster and frustration taker-outer. Shakespeare, eatcher heart out. My morality may be questionable, but not because I'm okay with being a genocidal maniac in a game.

I do feel pretty bad following the path of evil, which is why I'd make a crappy villain (Team Rocket anyone???)...

This pertains mostly to Fallout 3, Red Dead Redemption and game like that, where you can choose to play good or bad.

I don't mean morally (mostly) but physically difficult. Even if I try, I end up just shifting to good. Unless I'm playing the games wrong, for the most part the only ways to be evil is to randomly kill people, and I always try to play the suave and smooth evil doer (I can't think of any examples at the moment, think James Bond's evil twin if there was one)as opposed to the bloody randomly killing kind. And, yes, I blew up Megaton (once).

But especially in Red Dead, even when I went through a random killing faze, most of the story quests give you +Honor anyway, I just find it difficult.

So I'm wondering if anyone else holds this same evil ineptitude?

(For option two I thought about putting babies instead of human liver...but thought that was just a bit too evil)
Depends on the game. In Fallout 3, NPC's were just too human. I couldn't stomache killing innocent people. But in grand theft auto? Most people are scum and they actually run out in front of your car FOR NO REASON AT ALL. They are too stupid to live. It is hard to feel anything but joy for killing them. Same goes for Civilians in APB.

Actually, I tend to play a pragmatic or anti-hero rather than a straight up good guy or bad guy.

Sometimes I have problems being evil. Those times being when I'm talking to my party members in Bioware games.
Dammit, have less likeable personalities! I want renegade points!

Sometimes I find it hard because I will continue with the story and be forced to do good things, but mostly that can be fixed with a good helping of killing random people with a side of stealing.

Not at all. Basically, when I am playing an evil character, I would make all of the most obvious asshole choices. Not to mention all of the theft and murder. A really difficult way to play though, for me, is playing the in-between: playing a Gray character.

I'm usually always good. It makes the game much more difficult. Instead of murdering the people that want you to perform an extra task, and getting nothing for it, I take their task and complete it, adding to the games length, and I usually get something good for it.

I'll play as evil after I'm done with good, but only sometimes.

in games like Fallout 3 (eg deciding to arm a *blank*to*blank*the*blank*of*blank* for a sweet condo) yes I tend to hold back on playing the bad guy (unless it comes down to quickly nabbing some moral negative points to get a slightly crazy/fun sidekick) Or even Mass Effect, anything really where your decision has a crazy outcome I find it tough to be the bad guy

but when it comes to games where you are meant to be bad (the beginning to Force Unleashed was a damn good jedikilling good time)or even if there is choice but not as a big impact I am all for kicking good guy booty
