It depends entirely on what kind of game it is.
But mostly when/if I have other music on than the ingame music, I become so focused on the actual game that the music, among with all other outside noise (including people) disappear.
That's actually the main reason I don't play video games when I have friends over, or let them play instead and watch.

Usually I want to either talk to my friends or keep the feeling of the game. Brutal Legend and Fallout 3 both had awesome soundtracks that you have to listen to to get the experience. And if I played music while I played Brutal Legend, it would be the same as the music in the game!

Depends on the soundtrack or type of game. An atmosperic game like Silent Hill would be ruined by playing music in the background. While most shooters need a good song to make it better. Same with RPGs (deending on the soundtrack in it already)

Those composers spent months creating music that was perfect for the game, and you spit in their face by playing Nickelback instead?!

I can't even look at you right now...

I agree for the most part...the only exception is when in-game music is annoying and/or repetitive, which isn't often.

The music for the XBLA Magic game gets repetitive as HELL, so custom soundtracks are a must. Otherwise I can't really listen to music while I game, seeing as I have a 4-year music degree and am in school for a master's in conducting, where listening to music is an activity by itself.

Good games have good music to support them.

As for multiplayers, I never considered putting on music. Too absorbed in the game itself!

Depends. If I like the in-game music or am playing an RPG, I'll usually keep the music on. If the game music is annoying or I'm playing an MMO or something, I'll put on my own music.
