So basically, any sexist behavior I endure is my own fault for identifying as a woman? But it's perfectly okay for you to identify as a man, because you're a man, and since you admit to being a douchebag, it's okay that you're a douchebag.MinishArcticFox said:I agree that guys (me included) can be assholes. But it's not like this is a big secret or anything. You're basically bringing it on yourself if you make it apparent that you're a girl (ie naming yoursef xxShooterGallxx) and it's basically a trade off, you can be asked how big your tits are or called a fag.
I wouldn't use the word "fault" more like a consequence, similar to a person naming himself xxassbandit69xx and then being angry when someone calls him a fag. In the same way that there's nothing wrong with being gay just like there's nothing wrong with being a woman, but by identifying yourself you make yourself a target. No it isn't fair but a lot of things aren't, and I can hardly change ages of sexism. I have a female friend who doesn't identify herself as female and she doesn't have to put up with a lot of this shit.Emily Pritchard said:So basically, any sexist behavior I endure is my own fault for identifying as a woman? Do expect men to be douchebags when I do anything online related to gaming? Yes. Is it okay? No, it's not.
Yes! Thank you!BigHandInSky said:Found it!Doctragon said:Yeah, I agree that's pretty crap. There was once a 4chan picture a friend showed me. It was basically the different categories of gamers. Fanboys, know-it-alls, casual, etc. There was one called "girl gamer" and "gamer girl". The girl gamer said "Hey guys, I play games and I'm a GIIIIIRL" whereas the gamer girl said "Hey guys, what are you playing?". Meaning the girl gamer wanted attention for the fact that she plays games and has a vagina whereas the gamer girl just wanted to play games. I thought the picture was true and pretty funny. Unfortunately I couldn't find it again but you get my point.Jinxzy said:Some girls need there attention, they need it or they will explode. I've been kicked from a guild by a girl for being a girl. Because I was a treat to her attention. It sucks and annoys me as well... It's just a game but some of them take it personal.Doctragon said:Yeah, it does annoy me when girls are nerdy to get attention. It should be because you have a passion for nerdy things and not because it's the popular thing to do. Obviously not all female nerds do it for the attention but there are the few that do. It's somewhat sad as well.

But that's the thing. It's the best way to make sure it doesn't happen. You don't have to pretend to be a guy at all but not having the temptation shoved in their face surely helps. And why must you use your name as a username? Or your photo as an avatar? Explain the point of it for me please, I don't think I quite understand why. It surely attracts more male and douchebag attention and you have said you don't like it. Sure, it's not fair that you get shit for being a woman and congrats for not taking the easy way out but I just think it's more trouble than it's worth. I think it's better for me to prove myself to be a good gamer before people know my gender. Plus then I don't get special treatment. It's all me. And I like that.Emily Pritchard said:So basically, any sexist behavior I endure is my own fault for identifying as a woman? You have clearly never been on a roleplaying realm.... xDKimberlyGoreHound said:Yes, Jesus fuck they can get irritating. Thankfully, they don't tend to be too bad on WoW. I guess that's because everyone assumes everyone else is a fat hairy guy in his mom's basement, so nobody hits on anybody.
I have come to learn that not identifying myself as a girl makes a whole load of diffrence when I am playing a game online. It is just like not saying you are a muslim, communist, homosexual and/or other "different" archtype that might be out there. Because by identifying yourself as a minority within gaming you are inevitably inviting people to harass you. It doesn't matter if you will get called a whore, a ******, a terrorist or ignorant hick, until you open up and implicate that you are "different" you aren't.Emily Pritchard said:So basically, any sexist behavior I endure is my own fault for identifying as a woman? Well there you go!Basketballgaz said:(usually Modern Warfare 2)
I still don't really see why you'd need to use it as a username. Sure, it might make people google you but why not just have a link in your profile and/or sig? But as long as you know you'd get a lot more -bad- attention for it and accept it then it's no real problem. Of course it's not right, it would be great if we could all completely be ourselves in every medium but it's not going to happen any time soon at least so we just have to except it and do what we can.Emily Pritchard said:I use my real name and my real picture because I run a gaming/geek life blog for women and girls and women and crediblity is something I like to provide. If I play online, I don't offer up who I am readily or go out of my way to knock people over the head with the fact that I'm a girl, and I don't go in thinking everyone is going to be a douche. I do expect it from some, and generally brush it off when it happens.
I won't stand by and say that it's okay just because I reveal myself as a woman, though. I can understand that I'm going to get more of it because I use my name and my picture (I also log in with facebook, so it's a point of laziness, too) but I'm not going to say it's all right for women to be treated that way. It's not. Just because I should expect something doesn't mean it's right, you know?
Haha, that's what I usually do as well. Plugging in the damn thing and leaving it muted on the ground is a whole lot less work than muting everyone in the lobby.CaptainCrunch said:They're equally annoying to guys. My dad once asked me why I needed a headset to play MW2. I told him it was so little kids and assholes could call me "fag" while their parents weren't home. Then, I explained that the evil people at Microsoft made it so they could call me "fag" whether I had the headset or not, and that I keep it plugged in so I don't have to listen to them.
So, there's at least one solution - don't listen to them.
