Nope. Good graphics are nice, but if you can make a good game without them then you're a real developer. Good graphics are optional, you should concentrate on the actual game before making it look pretty.

If the Graphics are absolutely amazing, like soo good to fool someone, than great. I just mentioned getting Alan Wake, and my 10 year old sister said "I've seen the trailers for that movie!" and I said "It's a game, not a movie.", to which she replied "But it had real people in it!" I then said "Are you sure this was Alan Wake?" to which she firmly responded "Yes. It said Alan Wake in big blue letters."
I Don't mind bad graphics, but the worst that I can stand is Wolfenstein 3D. If they're worse than that, I can't enjoy the game.

Do they matter to me? No. Do I still enjoy and appreciate a good looking game? Of course. But if it came down to visuals vs. game mechanics (story, and gameplay) I would certainly choose Game mechanics.

They matter to me and, I'd imagine, should do to everyone. No, they aren't the most important factor or we'd never play flash games, MMORPG, DS,PSP or anything on an emulator but, FFS, who can argue that a good game wouldn't be even better if it also looked a bit better? No one, that's who. Silly poll-graphics DO matter or else we'd still be content with Zork or, at a push, bloody Asteroids.

Honestly, nobody is saying Graphics>Gameplay, are they? But suggesting we aren't in a better place with more freedom for developers to employ better and different artstyles in today's games is insane. As the poll is a choice between ultimates I suggest anyone voting "no" is a blatant liar or hoping for more detail where the poll allows for none.

As someone who regularly goes back to play older consoles and the better games on them(and therefore KNOW that G'eye does NOT need any remake in HD as the problem it has is modern FPS have left it obselete in ways way beyond the looks-which finding out was a sad, sad day)I'm happy to exchange looks for great gameplay on a regular basis but even I know we'd be better off had we had the graphics of today a long time ago-even if graphics are never the be all and end all.

Yes they do. Not as important as storytelling or gameplay but still quite important. If a game has bad graphics it affects whether or not I will buy it. Good graphics= more immersion.

Well I clicked yes because I do LOVE games with good graphics, but just because it has good graphics doesn't make it fun. I hate MW2, but it has good graphics. A good example of the best of both worlds (IMO of course) is The new (almost) Final Fantasy. It's fuckin' beautiful, and it was fun to play. However I haven't played any of the other ones. I'm working on that.

Absolutely. It is called a video game. Having said that, I am currently playing Faxanadu for my NES.

Good graphics naturally adds to the immersion of the experience. Weaker graphics cannot hold a good game back from being enjoyable. Bad gameplay can stop a gorgeous game in its tracks.

Yes of course they matter!! They're video games.

No don't mistake me for someone who will only play games with high end graphics and such. What I'm getting at is that they're a very important factor.

Artistic direction: This sets the whole mood and feel of a game. For example, if you're playing a platformer with anthropomorphic characters, you don't want a bland dull grey setting filled with loads of blood. You want a nice colourful setting.

Environments and objects: You expect a wall to be a wall, not something you can walk through for example. If something doesn't react to a programmed event the way it should, then it's awkward as hell to play.

Lighting: If a game's setting is too dark, or too bright, it makes it hard to see where you're going.

Camera angles: If you're playing a game with supremely poorly programmed fixed camera angles, you're going to want to kick a kitten. Trust me.

So yes, graphics are important. Anyone who disagrees is either severely misinformed as to what a video game is, or a presumptuious imbecile who assumes everyone who thinks graphics are important are morons who will not give older games a chance because "teh grafics r sh1t lulz!!!111".

They matter. They are not the whole game, but they are as necessary as gameplay or a good story.
I'd say it's 1/3 each. If you fail at one of those, the game can still be good, but if you only have one of them done right, then your game sucks.

If Mirrors Edge taught me anything, it's that good graphics aren't about looking real. It's all about looking good.

I don't care much about graphical quality (as in 8-bit, bump mapping, etc.) however, I do care immensely about art design. Super Mario Galaxy may have technical specs nowhere near as advanced as Gears of War and yet Super Mario Galaxy is ten times more beautiful.

If the gameplay is solid and the concept is well-executed, graphics shouldn't need to matter. IGN complained a lot about Mount and Blade Warband's apparently poor graphics, but I play it in DirectX 7 so my laptop can cope, with 800x600 resolution and it's one of my most-played games.

I do.

In a way, that If I could, I would bring the computer and console graphics to the level of Amiga 1200 with AGA chipset.

How I look at it, the better the graphics engines get you get to build a more immersive game from it.

Take Oblivion. Game looks great how it is and is pretty immersive at times. But I can't help but to notice that when you look off in the distance, you see a landscape that looks like someone took a shit and smeared it all over the place. With a simple mod to fix this, you can actually look into the distance and not have to notice ugly things and take away from the game.

Nothing is worse when you are playing a good game that looks good graphically and then you see something that has ugly textures, bad models, and stuff of that nature.

I believe if you were able to make Oblivion on the Crytek 2 engine, it wouldn't make the game play better, but it will give a more fluid, immersive game
