I've never seen a QTE until I played the Wii version of RE4. I had no idea what was going on and hated it when I died without an explanation.

Don't mind "press X to not die", what i HATE is "mash X to not die". Ares kept kicking my ass in God of War I because of that shit.

They have been used well in some instances (microwave tunnel in MGS4) but really, I'd rather just sit back and watch the game. Plus, don't you hate it when a cinematic starts, and goes into quick time events that you didn't think were going to be there, and end up missing it? Then you're on the edge of your seat for the rest of it when you do it again, but it's painfully easy..?

That was possibly the only thing I didn't like about Uncharted, silly little QTEs popping up when you least expect them.

Ahah! Exactly. Especially at the end. Oh well; still a great game despite QTE.

Shenmue was the only game that did it right...
Went through all 3 pages to see if someone brought up this game. Shenmue had a lot of QTE's in it but they were all done so amazingly, it wasn't "press X to not die" (sometimes it was) but most of the time failing meant changing the game.

Yes, with a passion, and I've already explained why 5 or 6 other times elsewhere. Why does this thread exist?

I don't really hate them as much as I am tired of them. The game that pushed me over the edge was Heavenly Sword and the new Prince of Persia because it felt like one long QTE.

Try the quick time events in Clive Barker's Jericho or Mercs 2. Fuck them all.

It depends. If quick time events are done properly then I have no problem with them. However most of the time they do not work well with the gameplay.

I didn't mind the quick time events in RE4, with the exception of a certain quick time event at the end of a boss.

I hate it in RTS games where the game breaks off when your base is cloase to being overrun, and you can't bring up any reinforcements because The game is to busy telling you how to play it. And afterwards, your base is dead. I don't know if this counts, but that is my interpretation of quicktime events.

Look I wanted to point out something:
Before Yahtzee came along, people were indifferent to quick time events, JRPGS, and first person shooters that had space marines. I don't hate Yahtzee (the man's a comedic genius) but I'm just pointing out that only AFTER his review of Halo 3 did the Halo hate really start (before that it was just angry fanboys saying that) and only when he started talking about his hate of JRPGS did people start agreeing and finally the quick time events were also his pet hate and now everyone is trying to be him by also hating them. That's my theory anyway.
It's all just an effort to be influenced by a popular opinion.

Actually, Vrex, much of what he (Yahtzee) said was pretty much stuff a lot of people were thinking and may have said in the past, but since most of us are worthless-shmoes and not Yahtzee, no one gave two bits about what we said. Plus he tends to say it better than we (or at least I) could ever hope to.

That said, I've long disliked Quick Time Events. They can bugger off for all I care. I like to relax when I'm gaming, I mean, that's why we PLAY games isn't it? They're these things we play in our recreational time to unwind and relax? I don't know about other people, but games haven't been so relaxing in the last 10 years or so. QTEs are one of the things that have popped up which just eat away at me when I play games. I don't have super reflexes, and when a cut scene shows up I DO put the controller down so I can enjoy the scene not so I can be ready to jump up at any second for a button pressing fest. Half of which I fail even when pressing the right button in some games.. I'm looking at YOU Resident Evil 4!

So yeah, even though some games like Shenmue really used them well, most games do not. It was nice when QTEs were these interesting new ideas that were only used in a few games (before Shenmue, they were nearly nonexistent), but now they're everywhere. And mashing.. let's face it, I'm 27 and I can't do the Weasel Fingers or whatever it's called to mash a specific button anymore without my hand/wrist aching afterwards.

Mind you, being high strung probably isn't the best state of mind to be playing most of today's games in...

Voted yes.

While games like Shenmue and GoW implement them well so they actually work in the context of gameplay, 90% of devs usually add them in to hide the shallowness of their games' gameplay. Most games that do use QTEs do not need them. They are not fun to slog through. Frustration is not entertainment.

p.s. About a week ago, I added the line "Thanks to overuse, misuse, and generally being disliked by most players, this videogame trope is rapidly becoming a Discredited Trope." in the Press X To Not Die entry at the TV Tropes site.
