Cut-Scenes are cut-scenes for a reason.

To tell story and increase the awesome factor.

Yahtzee's famous "Press X not to die" is an accurate description of all quick time events I've ever encountered.

It depends on the game, on the event, and on the presentation.

Good examples: God of War's br00tal boss finishers, Resident Evil 4's Krauser fight

Bad examples: Stuff like Marvel: Ultimate Alliance where it neither fits nor belongs.

No. God of War was awesome, look quick time events can be great when their done properly it's just that most of the time Devs screw it up. I suppose that if they cause a greater amount of suffering than they do enjoyment then you mistrustful of them but hating is a bit extream.

Shenmue was a game that used QuickTime events in a good fashionabe way.
If you messed up, you wouldn't DIE but you would just thread another pathway to your objective or sometimes you'd just have to re-do some parts of it.

Been done. But I have them, nevertheless.

Prince of Persia? I think it should be called "Prince of QFTs". Every fight is loaded with them, half of the acrobatics is QFT-esque and every single boss fight requires you to mash keys.

Even if they aren't too often and have a big margin of error (or, for example, require only to use one of the movement keys), like in Dark Sector, they are still iritating me.

Not if they're done well and not just for the sake of existing.

i enjoy them just fine in certain games.

I think they're mostly harmless so long as they are never, ever hard. Heavenly Sword being the prime candidate of a game that thought incorporating QTE into the combat was a good thing, the game is a nightmare of "Which arbitrary button do I mash to finish the combo?"

Some of the coolest things you will see in a game will be in a QTE, the basicly show you what your character is truly capable of.

Try resident evil 5. The game is full of stupid events of quick time.
If you think that is bad, try Resident Evil 4 on the PC with the badly ported and mixed-matched buttons on the Quicktime events. All of a sudden, I'm being chased by this huge rolling boulder and the button 7 starts flashing on the screen. wtf? [flattened as a pancake]

Wot.

Your character is capable of. Not you. It's not your skill. It's just luck + fast reaction.

edit: Also, QTEs change th egame into a movie. If I wanted to watch a movie, I would go to the cinema/buy a CD/DVD. I bought a game and I want to play a freakin game!

I will admit, qte on cutscenes is stupid, but to do a finishing move like on God of War, I think, is alright.

Quicktime events are ok in certain situations, the Resident Evil ones always killed me cos they were too random for my liking.
The Madworld ones were pleasant though, they were pretty straightforward, and usually meant something funny/bloody was going to happen

If QTE becomes a forced gameplay mechanic, or is way too repetitive, not to mention cheesy(Mercenaries QTE), then I may hate it.

On the other hand, if it's as visually rewarding as say, QTE in God of Wars, or Siphon Filter(PSP series). Then it does not get in the way of the game play, and seems almost to be a little bonus to watch some funny actions or over-the-top gory ones.

I voted "Yes", but... I did recently see one good use of a QTE. In FEAR2 you come up against a sort of mini-boss (Colonel Vaneck) and fight him in a short QTE. My initial reaction was "oh god, a QTE" but when I thought about it I decided that the QTE was probably the best way for the devs to handle the encounter. I mean, what are the alternatives? Either you play a cutscene (which somewhat breaks the whole immersive/interactive aspect of the game) or you have a boss fight which would have to be either easy and short (and therefore underwhelming) or long and difficult because he has stupid health (again, immersion is shattered) or - worst of all - ridiculously contrived (e.g. you have to shoot three generators powering a shield around him to make it go down for a second, or something equally silly). Out of all of those options, I'd choose the QTE.

But in general I really hate QTEs and think that whoever invented them should roast in hell for, oh, at least a century.
