Oh say can you see, By the Dawns early light what so proudly we hailed Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there;
O! say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!
Yea I know most of those words, but not all of them.

Very possible, apologies if I mixed them up :)

To the new question, sometimes I feel patriotic, other times I feel like I cant wait until it's over. Depends on when/where I am listening it.

I was wondering who knew the words to theirs. Yesterday, at a gig some guys behind me started singing ours before the band came on, they got the whole crowd singing. I only knew the "God save our gracious queen" so I just mumbled the rest.
Looking at it though, it's not exactly a hard song to remember.

God save our gracious Queen!
Long live our noble Queen!
God save the Queen!
Send her victorious,
Happy and glorious,
Long to reign over us,
God save the Queen.

To add more discussion, so I don't just get yes or no answers, do you partake in patriotism? Hand on heart, tears down the cheek when your flag goes up?
Do you feel strong emotions when you sing it?

[sub]
Do I sound like a therapist with the barrage of questions? [/sub]
God save the queen, ya mean the song by the Sex Pistols?

Everybody seems to know it. And I'll usually remember it at the time. But I can't for the life of me at the moment.

So, my anthem for the time being:

Go America!

Only the first Stanza. The Dutch anthem is rather silly though, since it's literally about a German guy still swearing allegiance to the king of Spain. Ironically enough, Germany and Spain are also the only countries that have succesfully conquered the Netherlands after the Romans. So yeah...
Learn your history.
I live in Dillenburg, knowing about dutch history is part of the upbringing in this city.
Wilhelm FREED holland from the spanish. He is considered the founder of the dutch republic.
And since I am too lazy to give you a lesson in history:
http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Willem_van_Oranje
Of course I know who Willem of Orange is. But that doesn't mean I have to like the anthem about him, even though someone already pointed out to me "Duitse bloed" does not refer to Germany (even though he was born there). I'm just not particulary touched emotionally when I hear it, most Dutch people aren't.

Oh, how the hell could I not? They fucking drum it in our skulls since birth.

Of course, if I tried reciting it here, it'd be called "Cheating", because people have already posted the U.S. anthem.

I know it all by heart, due to going to a private school where we sing hymns etc. The upshot, however, is an attitude of resignation; having sung them by mandate, I now see it, and most of singing, as little more than a job to be done.

There is, however, one hymn that is truly awesome, which has become out unofficial school anthem. 'Tis known as 'Jerusalem':

And did those feet, in ancient times,
Walk upon England's mountains green?
And was the holy Lamb of God,
On England's pleasant pastures seen?
And did the Countenance Divine,
Shine forth upon our clouded hills?
And was Jerusalem builded here,
Amongst these dark, satanic mills?

There's another verse, but I wouldn't want to bore you

missed a tiny bit there, "what so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming" no worries.

I wish that was our anthem... It would make England a better place to live in.

Huh I thought there was more to it. Although to be fair I probably wouldn't be able to sing it without the tune.
There's 3 versus (or more?), but it's mainly the first one that's only sung. We don't seem to take much pride in this country unless we're in a competition, and the royal family are becoming more and more useless.

A bugger about popular threads is that I've been told the same thing a fair few times now >__<

I know the first part of my national anthem, but not the whole thing, it goes on for bloody ages. No-one knows the other verses.

However, I haven't sung 'God save the Queen' since I was a child. For three reasons:

A. I don't believe in God.

B. I have no love for the Queen and would love Britain to be a republic.

and C. I don't like patriotism and consider it to be a vice and not a virtue.
on A I don't belive in god but I sing it anyway.
B you just made a powerful enemy freind :p
and C well I just feel like I have a service to queen and country and such not joining the armed forces though but in the case of say a militery invasion the government would likly give us guns and I would rather die then give up my country call me stupid or whatever but I would go down fighting painfull or not shouting for queen and country. That might evan make me a war story. If we win of course.
Well I do not feel like I owe the Queen anything, she has never done anything for me, and I resent the very idea of monarchy, it offends my very core. As such I'd be a hypocrite if I were to sing 'God save the Queen' when what I'm really thinking is 'screw god and screw the Queen'.

As for the last part of your post I would rather die than give up my freedom, if there was an invasion of England I'd be with you fighting in the resistance, I still wouldn't be patriotic mind you though, I really don't see the point. I'd go down for myself and my freinds and family's freedom, screw queen and country.

I'm pretty sure there's a lot of verses in ours than that. Fun fact, one of them actually talks about going up to scotland and killing them all or something (what would we know without QI?)
OT I don't know all of them and I wouldn't say I'm that patriotic but I do complain alot so I guess it makes me a true Brit ;)

I know most of the "Deutschlandlied" (Song of Germany).

The third verse, that is made into our national anthem.
The second verse that ISN'T our national anthem.
And the first verse, wich is considered all but forbidden to sing because it was the national anthem during the Nazi Regime.

Yes, i don't know if anyone mentioned it before me, but in germany, we have a national anthem that is essentially censored...

sind des Glückes Unterpfand:
Blüh im Glanze dieses Glückes,
blühe, deutsches Vaterland!

I know it by heart. I don't really care about it, though.
Beautiful. I know about 300 % of our anthem. I'm not kidding.

OT: I'm a patriot. Not the close-minded kind, it think everyone should be a patriot.
Both national and international identities are highly important to prevent mankind from further degenerating.
I love hearing someone say "I love my country" regardless from which nation he's from.
Even though I love my own country the most, I appreciate many other countries. No need for intolerance here.
There are many great countries on this world, mankind gave birth to alot of great cultures.
As I said, I don't really care about our anthem. Sure, it's a really nice tune, I like it as a song, but I frankly don't care about Germany.
See, I don't like identifying myself with Germany. Not because of its history or whatever, but because I am an individual. I identify myself with - you guessed it - myself, not with a country.
See me as me, see how I am! The fact that I'm German doesn't tell anything to anybody (okay, maybe the fact that I speak German, but nothing else).
Really, Germany could be destroyed, as long as my loved ones are alive and with me, I don't care.
I mean what's the difference between being born in Germany or a few hundred kilometers away? Do I really have to love my country just because coincidentally, I was born here?

I do know my national anthem, and think it's pretty pitiful when people don't. Take some pride in your country, dammit.

I don't do the whole bleeding-heart patriotism thing, but I do feel good when it plays. I don't do the hand and hat usually though, since I very rarely end up hearing it unless I'm in the marching band, and apparently as a para-military organization we're simply supposed to stand at attention.
I would take pride in my country, if there was something to be proud of ;)

OT : Naah, I know the first 6 words, and then I'm blank.. completely.. o_O

Yeah, I know all my anthem by heart (Italy) and it's four stanzas.
I'm pretty proud of it, because almost noone in this blasted country knows shit other than the first stanza. That said, i'm not a patriot; Italy is full of assholes.
Fratelli D'Italia!

I know ONE MORE WORD than the normal Englishman (most go "Dumdumdeedee...Ita-aa-lee"

If I remember rightly, it's all about grabbing Scipio's helmet and conquering things
Yeah, it's about how Italy has developed a national feeling (L'Italia s'è desta= Italy has awakened), and Scipio's helmet is going to be worn by her to go and conquer land and free the territory from the Habsburgs. In the second and third stanzas are mentioned some upbringings, riots and rebellions which lead to the developement of this national feeling, and how all Italians are brothers.

It's good in theory, but almost no one knows it fully.

Yes, I know the Finnish national anthem in both Finnish and Swedish. I'm very patriotic myself, and do feel very proud when a large group of people are singing that song. Some people look down at being patriotic like it's some sort of illness. There's nothing wrong with being proud of the place where you were born. People often make the mistake of thinking that "The country" equals "The government".

Finland actually had to defend it's independence directly during World War 2, as naturally did many other smaller countries. I'm very proud of the arguably successful defense that the (ridiculously outnumbered) finnish troops managed to uphold. Our anthem sings about an independent, free Finland - and because of certain people during the 1940'ies, it's true. :p
