Only the first Stanza. The Dutch anthem is rather silly though, since it's literally about a German guy still swearing allegiance to the king of Spain. Ironically enough, Germany and Spain are also the only countries that have succesfully conquered the Netherlands after the Romans. So yeah...

Yeah i know my nation, and i like my country (Australia!!!) but I'm not hugely patriotic/emotional about my country. I mean it's just some lines drawn up by people. Nationalism and patriotism has caused waaay to many deaths in the past for me to feel it's a good idea to be wildy gripped with patriotic fervor

There's a lady who's sure
All that glitters is gold
And she's buying a stairway to heaven

When she gets there she knows
If the stores are all closed
With a word she can get what she came for

Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
And she's buying a stairway to heaven

There's a sign on the wall
But she wants to be sure
'Cause you know sometimes words have
Two meanings

In a tree by the brook
There's a songbird who sings
Sometimes all of our thoughts are
Misgiven

Ooh, it makes me wonder

Ooh, it makes me wonder

There's a feeling I get
When I look to the west
And my spirit is crying
For leaving

In my thoughts I have seen
Rings of smoke through the trees
And the voices of those
Who stand looking

Ooh, it makes me wonder

Ooh, it really makes me wonder

And it's whispered that soon
If we all call the tune
Then the piper will lead us to reason

And a new day will dawn
For those who stand long
And the forests will
Echo with laughter

Oh, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, ooh, whoa, oh

If there's a bustle in your hedgerow
Don't be alarmed now
It's just a spring clean
For the May queen

Yes, there are two paths you can go by
But in the long run
There's still time to change
The road you're on

And it makes me wonder

Aw, uh, oh

Your head is humming and it won't go
In case you don't know
The piper's calling you to join him

Dear lady, can you hear the wind blow?
And did you know
Your stairway lies on the whispering wind?

(Solo)

And as we wind on down the road
Our shadows taller than our soul
There walks a lady we all know
Who shines white light and wants to show
How everything still turns to gold
And if you listen very hard
The truth will come to you at last
When all are one and one is all
To be a rock and not to roll

And she's buying a stairway
To heaven...

My country 'tis of thee, Austria-Hungary, obey your king...

OT: I know the National Anthem only when I'm in a crowd, if you approached me on the street and asked for it there is no way I could. I seem to only be patriotic in a crowd, after that, I really don't care so long as I'm not oppressed.

I was wondering who knew the words to theirs. Yesterday, at a gig some guys behind me started singing ours before the band came on, they got the whole crowd singing. I only knew the "God save our gracious queen" so I just mumbled the rest.
Looking at it though, it's not exactly a hard song to remember.

God save our gracious Queen!
Long live our noble Queen!
God save the Queen!
Send her victorious,
Happy and glorious,
Long to reign over us,
God save the Queen.
There are 2 more verses you know. I can never remember all the words to them.
Yeah, but they rarely sing the rest of it apparently. And I could only find the first two verses when I looked it up.

[sub]I didn't look very far though.[/sub]

Well, the first verse isn't exactly hard, as you said. The second and third are much harder to remember and most people don't even know they exist.
Unless they watch Blackadder.

I know the words to the first verse. I don't harbor any particularly patriotic feelings though - I've never really understood why I should... Is that unusual?

Apologies if I've already posted this - my internet connection is playing up, and keeps losing my posts...

The German part is not correct. As I said, it's a degenerate from the word "Diets", was a dialect (although Germanian) stood for "Dutch".

Nope. I only know about three lines of Advance Australia Fair.

As for patriotism in general, it irritates me in way that few things can. I place patriots in the same category as crying babies, yappy dogs and jock-itch.

I know them by hard, even the "forbidden" stanza (though I would never sing this bit - it's just overly patriotic, or even discriminating against everyone else. It was used in Nazi Germany and begins with "Germany, Germany, above everything else, above everything in the world". Rubbish.)
I am kind of disappointed that german kids don't learn the text in school. There was quite a long time were patriotic feelings weren't really... allowed in Germany. One did feel guilty then. But today, we can all sing these wonderful words together. I'm not really a patriot, but I get some goosebumps every time I hear it. After all, you actually COULD say I am a patriot, just one that criticizes everything those dumb politicians say or do and that isn't proud of this country's history.

Edit: Oh I am dumb. I forgot to add the lyrics. Well, the actual and official stanza is already on page one, but I would like to give one with a translation. Basically this translation is from wikipedia, but i will add a bit here in there to show how difficult it actually is to translate what it actually means.

First stanza ("forbidden one", not used, doesn't belong to the real anthem, but is taken from the same song)

Deutschland, Deutschland über alles,
Über alles in der Welt,
Wenn es stets zu Schutz und Trutze
Brüderlich zusammenhält.
Von der Maas bis an die Memel,
Von der Etsch bis an den Belt,
|: Deutschland, Deutschland über alles,
Über alles in der Welt! :|

Germany, Germany above all,
Above all in the world,
When, for protection and defence, it always
takes a brotherly stand together.
From the Meuse to the Memel,
From the Adige to the Belt,
|: Germany, Germany above everything,
Above everything in the world. :|

( I don't understand why they put "above all" here and "above everything" later, because both times it is "über alles" )

Second stanza (not used as an official part of the anthem, but again from the same song. It used to be the stanza that people like to sing while being drunk.)

Deutsche Frauen, deutsche Treue,
Deutscher Wein und deutscher Sang
Sollen in der Welt behalten
Ihren alten schönen Klang,
Und zu edler Tat begeistern
Unser ganzes Leben lang.
|: Deutsche Frauen, deutsche Treue,
Deutscher Wein und deutscher Sang! :|

German women, German loyalty,
German wine and German song
Shall retain in the world
Their old beautiful chime
And inspire us to noble deeds
During all of our life.
|: German women, German loyalty,
German wine and German song! :|

(wow. That one sounds just as good in english as it does in german.)

Third stanza, the official anthem and the one sung by everybody.

Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit
Für das deutsche Vaterland!
Danach lasst uns alle streben
Brüderlich mit Herz und Hand!
Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit
Sind des Glückes Unterpfand;
|: Blüh' im Glanze dieses Glückes,
Blühe, deutsches Vaterland. :|

Unity and justice and freedom
For the German fatherland!
For these let us all strive
Brotherly with heart and hand!
Unity and justice and freedom
Are the pledge of fortune;
|: Flourish in this fortune's blessing,
Flourish, German fatherland. :|

I hope this post isn't too long, but I am always interested in translations of anthems and stuff like that, so I thought it might be a good idea.

Don't get me wrong, I love my country, but I don't see what the song has to do with that. Honestly, I think the fact that so many Aussies know their anthem has less to do with caring about our country and more to do with caring about our sports teams.
If it wasn't for the fact we need a song for international sporting competitions I'd favour replacing the anthem with a minute of embarassedly avoiding all eye contact for a minute and toeing the ground...

And the people wanting Waltzing Matilda for our anthem can fuck right the fuck off. I hate that song. I hate it more than I hate John Williamson. If Advance Australia Fair is to be replaced it should be replaced with The Angels "Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again?" because Australia deserves an anthem with a chorus containing the chant-back line of "NO WAY, GET FUCKED, FUCK OFF!"

I can't even speak the language of my national anthem (Welsh). The words I do vaguely know of it I couldn't translate. "Mae hen wlae yn glwadae... glwad! Glwad" or something like that :p
