I have to say that one of my favourites has to be 'The Whisperer in Darkness', if only because of the payoff. I love they way he tends to wait until right at the end to drop that final detail that pulls the whole story into horrifying focus. Oh, and 'The Music of Eric Zahn' (might have got the name slightly wrong) gives me chills for some reason. That said, I do also love 'The Dream Quest of Unknown Kaddath', so it's not just his horror that I'm a fan ofhypercube said:I've pretty much read everything he's written. Got a bunch of anthologies of his. Agreed, "The Colour Out Of Space" is brilliant, but "The Mountains of Madness" is my favourite. Oh, and "The Festival" is a corker as well.
To be fair, although he had several mythological 'cycles' and called upon work by other writers in his inner circle, not to mention his works when he was trying to imitate Lord Dunsany, it's pretty common and completely acceptable to refer to most of his creations under the umbrella term of the 'Cthulhu Mythos'. Calling people retarded for having a different opinion? That's just low, not to mention arrogant.Projo said:If you only know about Lovecraft because of Cthulhu, you're retarded, Likewise, if you consider the Cthulhu Mythos to be the best of his work, you're retarded. The only thing worse than people who don't recognize Lovecraft's work are the people that say "oh, lovecraft, i love cthulhu!" Cthulhu rarely even appeared in his writing, and was not the most diabolical of his gods.
And yeah, he was a big racist.
Cthulhu I don't mind, but if I were to ever look upon the true form of Nyarlathotep, or dare to stare at the blind idiot god as he dances to infernal pipes at the centre of the universe? Now those bad boys would make me happy to catch a glimpe of Cuthbert himself instead.Pink_Pirate said:Cthulu is disappointed in the thread
Then again.. if you dont know what it is, you should probably consider yourself lucky...
