Well, Lovecraft is to Horror what Tolkien is to Fantasy, in a way. Not even having heard of him therefore is a lil...not so good :) But then again, there werent three movies with faggy shoggoths traveling to the mountain of madness, so i guess its cool...

but i agree, there should be an option to vote for "heard of, but havent read"...

I have read maybe 2 thirds of his works and I absolutely love him. I did a big research project on him this year for Language Arts (English). I titled the paper "Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Lovecraft Providence wgah'nagl fhtagn". My teacher didn't get it or appreciate it all that much. It's hard to choose my absolute favorite, but "Dagon" is definitely up there.

EDIT: And "The Rats in the Walls"

And yeah, he was a big racist.
Funny story about that, his one and only wife was a Russian Jew. Lovecraft was actually a pretty interesting person. He never did any drugs or even drink (despite what some people first thing when they read his stories). He was also an amateur astronomer and was very interested in the sciences.

I went through a major Lovecraft phase while in high school and read every book of his that was published at the time. Living in New England then really helped set me up for some great scary nights reading his books. I loved them all but haven't re-read him in years.

As an aside, some of the funniest bad movies are the older ones (60's and 70's) based on his stories, like the 1970 version of The Dunwich Horror or 1968's The Crimson Cult. They're lots of fun to watch with friends.

Read and loved. The Colour Out of Space, Herbert West - Reanimator, Cool Air and Call of Cthulhu are my favorite stories of his.

The really hilariously racist ones generally aren't all that good though.

My dad used to read me his stories when I was younger. He was considered a pulp fiction writer and one of the best in this field, in many instances, he can also give Edgar Allen Poe when it comes to gothic short stories (IMHO). My favourites of his was "The rats in the walls", "Herbert West: Reanimator", "The witch on the doorstep", "Dagon", "The history of the Necrominon" and perennial favourite "The call of Cthulu"

Huge fan of Lovecraft. I spent every morning on the train for a month reading his short stories on my phone. He came up with the craziest stuff. But it got a bit repetitive because he'd use the same devices over and over, and since so many of the stories were narrated in first person, I knew that the narrator survived and that just ruined it for me. Never mind that they were often suicidal/insane. Still, amazing writer. He made my mornings very interesting.

Nearly all his works are available on wikimedia, so there's no excuse not to at least read The Call of Cthulu. It may suprise folks that such a famous and genre defining work of literature is just a short story. And I do mean short.

I've heard of him, but I've never read any of his works. I keep telling myself to find one of his books and read it, just to see if his writing is something I can enjoy. Unfortunately, I tend to forget. Maybe sometime this week I'll go to the bookstore and see if I can find anything by Lovecraft.

I've pretty much read everything he's written. Got a bunch of anthologies of his. Agreed, "The Colour Out Of Space" is brilliant, but "The Mountains of Madness" is my favourite. Oh, and "The Festival" is a corker as well.
I have to say that one of my favourites has to be 'The Whisperer in Darkness', if only because of the payoff. I love they way he tends to wait until right at the end to drop that final detail that pulls the whole story into horrifying focus. Oh, and 'The Music of Eric Zahn' (might have got the name slightly wrong) gives me chills for some reason. That said, I do also love 'The Dream Quest of Unknown Kaddath', so it's not just his horror that I'm a fan of :)
Ah yes, "The Music of Eric Zahn"! I'd forgotten about that one, it's brilliant. Damn it, time to start reading them again :)

I've depleted my public library's collection of Mr. Lovecraft numerous times.

Y'know, down in the depths, Ctulu sleeps.

Read it, loved it. In fact, 'The Dreamquest of Unknown Kadath' is my current lunch-break reading material, and is sat on the corner of my desk as I write this.
