I have heard of him, but I have never actually read any of his work. That said, in an effort to improve my English and writing skills, I have started reading English literature. So who knows? If I somehow manage to get my hands on it, I might read one of his books.

Right now, though, I already have plenty of books I want to read.

Heard of him, bought the Necronomicon. Love it. Haven't finished it though, and one of my friends are borrowing it. So I'm reading The Complete Chronicles of Conan in the meantime. Bought them at the same time from Amazon.co.uk, and they're both huge black tomes, with golden lettering on the cover. Looks awesome.

i know Lovecraft and Cthulhu
only read War of the Worlds though
War of the Worlds is H.G. Wells. xD

Lol, this thread's timing is perfect. I just came back from my glorious local library with The Best of H.P. Lovecraft: Bloodcurdling Tales of Horror and the Macabre.

Yes, I have heard of H.P. Lovecraft and I love him. Simply put, if you like horror and sci-fi, Lovecraft's your man. He practically started 20th century horror fiction. Tekeli-li anyone?

Absolutely adore Lovecraft. I've read MOST (not all) of his works, have the Necronomicon and various other collections of short stories...he revolutionised the horror genre, because he usually doesn't actually describe what he's seeing. It's left entirely up to the imagination of the reader which, usually, makes it even scarier, because it makes you think of something probably more grotesque and terrifying than what he originally had in mind.

The movie The Mist was inspired by Lovecraft...you get fleeting glimpses of the monsters but you tend to not really get a substantial amount of time to study it. Like at the start, the thing with the tentacles under the garage door...you don't see what it comes from. Thus you imagine something worse.

He was a clever writer...and an inspiration to many modern horror writers.

H.P. Puff N' Stuff? Nope, never heard of the woman.

Now, if you don't mind, I'm late for the town sacrifice...

I read his stuff all the time. I have everything he has ever written that was released. Very imaginative and just amazing. I do not like it when people try to write like him though.

I have several books of his short stories and poems ^^ I love the mythos and I think my favorite at the moment is Shadow over Innsmouth. I am also a fan of the misadventures of Randolph Carter.

I have seen a few of the movies and can't help but wonder why there aren't more major films based on the mythos...Most of what I've seen are made-for-TV films...Maybe it's a good thing you don't get too many Lovecraft films though >.>

I also find it kinda strange that there is no Order of Dagon in operation...Scientology was made by a Sci-Fi writer after all. Of course, there could be an actual Esoteric Order of Dagon in operation, pulling the strings and waiting for the stars to be right before coming out into the open...yes...that would make sense...

by it do you mean the short story "Call of Cthulhu?" ol' HP Lovecraft did a lot of short stories and other amazing horror stories. My favorite would still have to be At the Mountains of Madness. After awhile you do kind of realize there's a common device of "...and suddenly he was insane!" at parts. But its good horror.

Has a lot of influence, too- there's a short story by Neil Gaiman titled, "Old Shoggoth's Peculiar" that almost serves as a parody of ALL of Lovecraft's works, as well as a being a damn good story on Gaiman's part.

Strangely enough I've played the Call of Cthulhu CCG, I own the boardgame Arkham Horror and my friend can't shut up about the works of Lovecraft, but I haven't read a single story by him yet. :p

I've read "Call of Cthulhu" and At the Mountains of Madness. I liked them pretty well. The mythos behind it all is great, but the text itself is a bit dense.

in my opinion. That would go to the Dunwich Horror.)
I concur, The Dunwich Horror is by far my favorite Lovecraft short story. I especaily like the scene after Wilbur is killed when the monster appears and terrorizes Dunwich. Brilliant.
