Hmm, the only anime I really enjoyed watching was Death Note. I have been trying to find one with a story as good as Death Note's, and with the same amount of atmosphere and suspense like the show had but can't find one because I'm an anime noob.

I've watched a couple of the ones that look interesting. Like Afro Samurai and Hellsing were enjoyable but the whole cutesy anime backdrops with love bubbles etc are just annoying. Also I just don't like Japanese, it is highly annoying to my ears. Note: I dislike it because it is annoying not because it is Japanese, there is no prejudice involved. Also the whole exaggerated art style of anime annoys me too some times. Midgets there for the soul purpose of cuteness like Manta from Shaman King just bug me for example.

If it isn't obvious I'm more of a western animation fan.

Anime is what happens when a culture understands that animation can be a serious storytelling medium. In America it's nothing but stupid comedy or kid's stuff: Japan understands its potential. Nowhere else in the world are such serious, mature stories being told as Death Note, Full Metal Alchemist, Darker Than BLACK, Clannad, etc., through animation. I love anime.

Yes, I do like it. Though, asking if you like anime is like asking if you like "Shows with actors in them." Anime is an animation style in which there are many, many genre's. Don't like the comedy stuff? Avoid it, and only go for the drama's. Don't like drama's? Go for realistic action ("Baki the Grappler," for example, has no power-levels, no energy manipulation, etc. It's just about a high-school aged grapler. As in, Judo, Jiu-Jitsu, wrestling, etc).

Their are sports manga/anime that are completely realistic, and there are sports anime manga that are about as far-fetched as you can get. There are action oriented anime, comedy, romance, etc.

Seriously, saying you hate anime is like saying you hate "movies." It's dismissing an entire style of stuff, and probably because the stuff that you are exposed to is all the easily marketable, cliche filled mediocrity that fills prime-time anime slots on TV.

Go watch the "Hellsing Ultimate" OVA's. Go watch "Hokuto no Ken" (where almost every action-anime cliche originated, but Hokuto no Ken is about a million times better than most modern action anime. It's also really old, so it's sometimes hard to watch because of the absolutely awful early animation which grows much better over time). Go watch the anime movie "Paprika," which is just a giant acid-trip about dreams, but is very entertaining (though a bit polarizing due to it's rather odd subject matter).

With all due respect, if you put in the time, I can almost guarentee that you'll find something you'll like.

That is a terrible generalization of anime.

If you are to judge something then you must experience it first, try an anime series like Death Note or Code Geass or Darker Than Black.

If you still hate it then go away and hate it quietly.

I used to be obsessed with anime. Then I grew up a little bit and realized how simply obnoxious many characters were. Now I still dabble in anime but it's nowhere near the immediate fangirl acceptance I used to have back in the day. So yes, I do like anime, but I've developed standards for it.

I'm with the people that see anime as a medium and say your description is over simplification. That being said, I can't say I'm a fan of the graphic style, by now I am so used to it (been watching anime for 20 years) I simply don't find it unusual. For various reasons I don't usually watch Western animation.

Where's the option where I say I don't like it but don't despise it?

Granted, I don't like it because it, more often than not, uses the same tired storylines, stereotypes and art style. Sure they'll tweak it a bit so it's not totally "same shit, new day", but it's mostly there. However, it doesn't mean I'd rant to people who do like it. I'd express my displeasure once just like I would about anything I don't really like, but that's it.

I dont dislike anime, and i actually like anime in art, or anything 2d really. But in movie form, i just can not stand the plots, writing, stereotyical behavior, predictability, etc.
Again, i like anime, just not in films.

Anime is a medium with an absurd plethora of different genres... I think Yhatzee made that point somewhere.

OT: Did anyone see "Grave of the Fireflies"? That was so horribly depressing.
Yeah, watch that movie once and then never again. It's fucking soul-chrushing.

The quality of anime has gone down the tubes in recent years, but the older stuff is still some of the best animation ever made. Here's hoping for a new Miyazaki movie. *crosses fingers*

Kind of a select few of options then. I don't despise it... I just don't like it. Just not a big fan of the whole crazy hair-doos, or the flashy colors etc.

Well as an art style I just don't like the look of it very much.

As for the fact that anime's considered a genre in of itself, I've never really been one for the common traits among quite a few animes (When it's not grinning hyperactively happy fun it's incredibly dark, strange and serious), I've never appreciated the fact that to get into it I'd have to

-Pose a question regarding getting into it on the internet

-Have half the people there fill my lughole about how nothing else on earth can compare to Saruiki Hari Nadakuwa or whatever and the other half basically say "L0L0L B1G HAIR ANDROG'S R 4 PUSSIES!!1!" before everything descending into an enormous flame war.

-Go halfway across Sydney to get to Chatswood (Or as I like to call it the Japanese culture snob capital of New South wales) and spend hours perusing strange stores attempting to hunt down the one book or dvd or whatever most people reccomended, find it, fork out fifty bucks for it due to all the kids liking everything from Japan nowadays.

-Go home, read it (Watch it WHATEVER. To me the only difference between anime and manga is motion) and probably not get into it as much as I try.

-Bring it up later on a forum and get berated by a bunch of esxtremely annoying, egotistical "Otakus" or whatever the terms are who claim that I've misinterpreted my own opinion.

and I don't enjoy the culture that surrounds it that much either.

I love it to pieces, especially D. Gray-man. It's an important part of my life.
