Several of my friends absolutely love it. I personally cannot stand it. The wacky hairstyles, the giant swords, the men that look like women, the way people suddenly get giant heads when they yell at people....my reasons for hating it go on and on. Anyway, I was curious about how many people like it.
Then don't watch kid's shows?
Shonen anime is aimed at young males, like 10 to 16 years old.
Try some seinen, like Monster or Black Lagoon.
Those are of an entirely different league.

You know there are series that are more serious that do not do those things. If it isn't your style then those differences are unlikely to sway your opinion however.

That, Pokemon was an anime, and that had a major effect during my childhood.
And I like anime to this date too, though I haven't watched it for a couple of weeks.

I hear you man, its the same with me and real life tv with real actors, you see i tried this show called neighbours and wow was it bad, it was boring, nothing happened, and i didnt care about any of the characters totally not my show atall. So when people tell me about all those great shows (In their opinion) like house and heroes and doctor who and others, i just tell them dont be a fool i know they must all be terrible because i've watched neighbours and that was bad.

/end sarcasm

Seriously anime is just as varied as any other form of media, EVERYTHING you've just described sounds like the anime thats aimed at younger teenagers and even that is a preferance thing. So watch some decent anime that contains none of these things, the only way that anyone can say i dont like anime is if they take an issue with the fact that its animated. And if you arent saying that then all you can say is i dont like these animes that i watched and i probably wont like these animes that are the same genre.

I havent liked any soaps i've seen, i've seen afew episodes of afew soaps, therefore i probably will not like a soap that i havent seen. - Logical Sentence

I havent liked any soaps i've seen, i've seen afew episodes of afew soaps, therefore i do not like all television that features actors in real life - Non Logical Sentence

Anyway i'm probably being alittle bit more offensive that i intend to be but this is the a post that has long been coming with the hundreds of people saying the non logical sentence, and you have claimed their are other reasons you dislike anime so maybe you have watched them all, or atleast watched 2/3 of every single genre of anime and have therefore formed a valid opinion on whether or not you will enjoy any given anime.

Neighbours is bad enough that that's a legitimate excuse...

I use to love anime, now though I kinda just like it. Seems like every year their are less and less series I take interest in. Sigh, I miss the 90s, where the average anime was closer to the likes of Ghost in the Shell, Ninja Scroll and Akira than fucking Naruto.

I did really enjoy watching Gurenn Lagann which I only just watched last week. That, Desert Punk, Ergo Proxy and GiTs: SAC are the only modern anime I've really enjoyed in recent years.

Some aspects of it really get on my nerves. The huge eyes, the over-the-top cuteness, the horrid english voiceovers.

Then again, the only ones I've seen are Elfen Lied and the assorted versions of Ghost in the Shell which is hardly enough to judge the entire genre. Elfen Lied had its moments but was mostly crap. Ghost in the Shell was pretty good and interesting but a bit clumsy when it came to telling the viewer exactly what the fuck was going on.

Oh, I also saw something called Neon Genesis: End of Evangelion. It actually started out quite good. There was a disturbingly psychotic redhead in a giant robot. Then suddenly all the characters melted and it turned into some sort of unholy union of pretentious student film and bad acid trip.

Oh yeah, and there was one called Grave of the Fireflies. It was really fucking depressing.

So I guess I'm ambivalent on the subject.

I have nothing against it, but I've never really watched any. In fact I can't think of a single Anime series I've seen besides the original Digimon and Pokemon shows when I was a kid (IMO Digimon was the FAR better show).

What shows would be a good way to get into it (preferably are easy to get into and are easily available)

*EDIT* Wait. How could I forget Dragonball Z?! It kicks ass.

I watch some searies but I am more of a manga person (anime is film/movie, manga is book-format) because it's faster, you can read it in your own pace and often it is the original without fillers or anything of the sort (sry for going a bit off topic). But yeah, anime in general is fun to watch if you find a good searies that works for you. Also in my country many think anime is "childish" because what they think of is pokemon and stuff they watched when they were kids, and they are completely correct that it's anime too but often the searies I watch can be pretty bloody and you learn much from them, everything from small phrases in japanese (I watch it in original language with english subs, I hate dubbs) and also there are often references to the Japanese culture in many anime searies.

Well the most popular on the market at the moment, is Naruto, Bleach, One Piece and maybe Fairy Tale (an upriser). The three first are pretty old shows and have lots of chapters already while fairy tale is pretty new as an anime. Recent shows I've watched which are complete and are good searies according to me are Soul Eater (51 chapters), Full Metal Alchemist (51 chapters, but now the brootherhood searies has started, it follows the manga more than the first FMA) and Busou Renkin (26 chapters). These are all fighting style with a little humour mixed in and then there are more humorous animes like Love Hina (which is very funny, a little pervy maybe but nothing harsh). Hope this helps you into the world of anime ^^. Also if you want a little sneak peak into any show go to YouTube and write the name of the searies and after that "amv" into the search bar. This will give you clips, often from fights from the searies that a fan has put together and tried to sync the clips with a song.

I grew up on Looney Tunes and Animaniacs.
Anime didn't even stand a chance to wiggle its way into my heart.
As such, it annoys me. I don't have any good reasons, it just annoys me.

Death Note was great. Just watch it in Japanese with subtitles. Much better than this horrible dubbing crap.

"The wacky hairstyles, the giant swords, the men that look like women"

What anime have you been watching? Try films by Studio Ghibli, or the tv series 'Death Note'. There is more than enough anime that doesnt fit that description.
indeed, if hes trying to escape from the giant swords, watch some sci-fi anime, or a good mecha anime, like Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagan.... then again.... there is that one single little sword thats on half the series, but he can escape the men who look like girls.
try it out OP, im sure youll ifnd it without what yo dont like....

death notes also very nice, its very realistic, other than the notebook, so youll like it, or you will as ong as you understand the story.

Going by the description it sounds more like you hate Final Fantasy than anime, but I digress.

Most of what I watch these days is anime, but then I don't have a TV either. Notable exceptions being Dexter (bring on season 5!), Heroes (haven't finished season 2) and more recently True Blood (so far only season 1).

" It's like what I say when people ask me if I enjoy anime: That's a medium, not a genre. It's an animation style. Ask me about specific examples. On second thought, don't. You're very fat and unattractive and you smell like old milk."Y.C.

what he said.
There are a few good series. Usually not those with more than 30 episodes.
And yes, as much as i don't like 99,99% of it, i have to admit that most of the cool shows i loved as a kid were japanese cartoons(transformers, thundercats, sabre rider etc), so i will not throw the ring of power in the fujijama to sink the island of evil.
