Anime is fantastic depending on the series.

good stuff: Baccano, Code Geass, Death note, Trigun,Full metal alchemist.

Garbage(in my opinion): Naruto, Inuyasha, Bleach(and many more).

Cowboy Bebop, Ninja Scroll, Vampire Hunter D.

I like certain series but abhor others. I think when one pictures anime the first and VERY FIRST image that pops into their head is either Akira or Fist of the Northstar. THAT is the very pinnacle and definition of watch Japanese Animation should be.

All the word "anime" implies is that it's a style of animation generally native to Japan.

That's it.

Of course there are some good ones and some bad ones. I dislike much of anime - fuck, I dislike much of EVERYTHING and I'm still what you could call a fan of anime. Cowboy Bepop, Ghost in the Shell, Fullmetal Alchemist, Death Note and so on, various movies from the 80s and 90s and 00s including Akira, Howl's Moving Castle, Laputa, Spirited Away, and so on... Those things are rather dear to me.

Anime is just a medium. And it's no more stereotypical then any other medium. I mean, look at most Hollywood movies. And I won't even mention various annoying tv series. Everything is practically the same and filled with the same cliches.

Some anime can be very generic admittedly, but then a series comes along and totally redeems my faith in anime...

Check out excel saga, pretty much a piss-take on all things manga and anime and well worth a look.
Check out Baccano, It may be one of the funnest animes you ever watch.

I watch the occasional show, but I tend not to actively seek it out. If one is recommended to me, I'l watch it and see if it is for me.

I know it's probably uncool to like Bleach and Naruto, given how they're universally despised by those who see them as too mainstream or popular (which is as good a reason to hate anything as anything else I suppose). I do like them though, I like the stories (though Bleach has gotten rather shakey lately), the characters and the surprises that come along once in awhile to change everything.
I like stuff like AMG and K-On as well cause they're funny and silly and don't take themselves particularly seriously.

Several of my friends absolutely love it. I personally cannot stand it. The wacky hairstyles, the giant swords, the men that look like women, the way people suddenly get giant heads when they yell at people....my reasons for hating it go on and on. Anyway, I was curious about how many people like it.
Know what you mean, I seen Anime with "The wacky hairstyles, the giant swords, the men that look like women, the way people suddenly get giant heads when they yell at people"(not that I like that earthier),but not all Anime is like that. If I was going to chose one of your poll answers I would chose "Only a select few series" because of that (The wacky hairstyles, the giant swords, etc).

I'm not trying to win you over/try to get you to watch Anime, you just need to find some other kind of Anime (preferably one that doesn't do that, or doer it only a little) if you ever do decide to look at one again.

Personally, one of the Amine?s I watch is Ghost in the shell.

Anime isn't a genre. It's a medium. Saying you hate anime is like saying you hate all music because you don't like pop music. There are plenty of anime where the guys look like guys. There's a lot of creativity to be found in anime. Yeah, there are a lot of dregs that do fit your description, but not all.

Yes, I like a lot of anime. I probably waste too much of my time watching it.

I feel somewhat blasphemous for not being that into animé in today's age but I find most of it to be a bit overbearing - although I like Yu-Gi-Oh! 'cos I play the card game...heh.

I used to like the Pokémon animé until they screwed about with it.

I enjoy it far more than any cartoon...
Ermmm...it is a cartoon, whether you believe it or not. Its just a cartoon with a differnet art style.

I personally don't like it because of the long, extremely dragged out storylines. I understand 100 episodes, but anything past is just getting hard to watch. Because I love closure, and if I'm waiting 250 episodes for it to finish, chances are the finale won't be worth all the hours watching it.

Also how they're almost always based on some teenagers doing some epic shit. And how most other adults in the show are stupider and weaker compared to the teenagers. And the retarded animations that try to be cute...that ones hard to explain, but it isn't the main reason for it anyways.

As far as I am concerned anime does not equal cartoon.
There is a clear difference. They are two different kinds of animation.
Say, if you like cars. Compare your favourite car with a piece of crap that is barely road-worthy. They are both cars, but they are both different. Same with anime and cartoons.

I like anime a lot. If you can find a good show with interesting art, compelling characters, and an involving story you should give it a try regardless of the genre. I just find that's the case with most animes.

Some of my favorite titles are Chobits, Death Note, Wolf's Rain (till the end, anyway) and D.N. Angel.
That said, my personal guilty pleasures are Love Hina and Digimon Frontier.... *is ashamed.*

Hmm... perhaps you've been looking at the wrong genres of Anime. I would recommend Slice of Life style animes, or perhaps action or period action animes. Baccano! and Welcome to the NHK are some pretty good ones.

Little warning on the latter, if you decide to watch it, the style of humor is pitch black, no cream or sugar, and all the characters are horribly messed up, but it's a pretty damn good show (the dub is better)

EDIT: ANYTHING by Hayao Miyazaki (particularly Howl's Moving Castle... if only to hear Christian Bale do his silly Batman voice in a different context X3) is really good too.
