I own 3 shotguns, 2 12 gauges and a 410, and a .22 rifle.

I inherited them and use em almost exclusively for skeet/target range stuff. It would also be convenient if someone ever broke into my house.

Shooting someone who walks into your house or yard is illegal, even in Texas).
Sorry but no its NOT illegal. Self defense. If they are running away off your property and you shoot them yes you can get in trouble. You CAN use deadly force if someone breaks into your house. By doing that they are already threatening you.
Acually, unless they are literally about to shoot you or hit you or your family with something, it IS illegal to shoot them. I can stand in your yard or walk into your living room and as long as I make no hostile actions, killing me would be murder. I would be trespassing of course, but it is up to law enforcement to remove me, not you. It's a fucked up law, I will admit, but that's how it is.
Most states have the castle doctrine in law
Castle Doctrine. The term comes from the landmark 1985 Colorado statute that protects people from any criminal charge or civil suit if they use force ? including deadly force ? against an invader of the home.[2]
This legal doctrine is often linked to the rights of homeowners to bear arms, as defined in the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution in the case of District of Columbia v. Heller.

So if your in my house it can be assumed your up to no good and a threat and i'm well within my rights to kill you.
In twenty states (including my own), you are correct sir. I guess I should have figured given that Indiana is usually a red state, until just recently. Good thing I haven't tried to vandalize any houses lately.

I would own a gun if i could spare the cash. right now my spare cash is being put away for a motorcycle....after that, i think i'll buy a Taurus model 608. thats an 8-shot .357 magnum. not the biggest, but powerful enough to put a man down, and with the right load, a man wearing a bulletproof vest. I suppose motivation behind the purchase would come down to protecting my house and my wife, but even without the gun i'd still put my life on the line to save hers.
51oz. and almost a foot long not a good choice. .357 isn't really all that necessary or or appropriate for a defensive handgun. Depending on your size you might want something a little smaller and easier to handle. Not saying you can't handle the gun but in the kind of scenarios your talking about a foot long revolver is going to be difficult to use. And always remember that your primary objectives in a defensive scenario are to egress from the scene quickly and and ensure the safety of bystanders

No, because I'm not a psycho and don't plan on shooting anyone anytime soon. I'd rather someone steals everything in my house, than I risk the chance of ending another person's life.

Plus the fact where I live, it's illegal. And thank god too.

Nah, just kidding. I like to go hunting occasionally during the autumn.
...

I hope you actually eat the meat, other wise your just killing animals for the sake of it, which is barbaric in my opinion.

The idea of it all still seems barbaric in itself, just that you don't eat the meat is more barbaric, along with fishing in my mind, why kill some thing, when you could by a version ment for slaughter?

For instance chickens. The ones that are bred for meat, don't know what true life is like, so I don't mind eating them, as they don't know that this is "cruel"( I use that term loosely) treatment for them.

Where as if you kill a fish in a river, or a rabbit in the forest, or even a dear, that animal was living a "normal" life, until you came along and shot it with out real need to. Which I believe is barbaric.
Just wanted to say that animals do not possess metacognition, and do not run around thinking "Damn, I hope I don't get killed by a hunter today...I'm normal"...Sure, it's wrong to not eat them if you kill them, but they don't care, and can't care.

Whilst I appreciate your sentiment, you might want to check your definition of metacognition.

Remember too that the "smarter" animals (all of which, I just realised, happen to be carnivorous) learn and notice all sorts of things and will react to them accordingly later on (I had a pet dog that I got from someone else because they didn't want it, who was afraid of the rustle of plastic bags after they'd tried and failed to kill her off with one).

Thinking further on it, most vegetarian animals can't be taught things, so perhaps killing them off isn't a big issue. Anyway those thoughts are for another place.

My weapons have always been purely for pest control (eradication of rabbits), humanitarian reasons (killing off mauled cattle, dying pets who are in pain), and animal death for the sake of food (i.e. cattle)

Still pretty intimidating. If I came up on your lawn and you pulled out a gun I wouldn't even think about the ammo in it, I'd be sprinting away as fast as possible.

Yes. I wouldn't be able to live knowing I'd ended someone's life just because I was protecting myself.

That's certainly an interesting train of thought. Not that that particular idea is bad or anything, just..you know, strange? Perhaps it's a cultural thing?

Chalk it up to cultural differences, thats what I'm doing. Everyone was raised a different way, you know?

Surprised I'm a generally nice guy or suprised I don't value my life?

Yeah, if only people would take that into consideration more often.

I own a guns for home protection (9mm pistol & 12 gauge shotgun)

If I'm home and someone or a group of someones break into my house w/ bad intentions i don't plan on throwing my hands up in surrender or coming at them w/ a steak knife.

I also enjoy just shooting targets. I shoot bow & arrow too, but that's not really as practical for home defense.

Shocked that you value some thugs life over your own. I know theres cultural differences, but i've never seen someone who values a criminals life over their own. And i've been around.
I suppose it's because, even though I'm certain the vast majority of the human race are complete pricks, I know theres a reason people do bad things. I don't see why I should maybe kill some poor guy who doesn't have a bed to sleep on, or who can't pay to feed his kids.

I actually own many guns. Be it for just plinking, hunting or whatever. Some people have problems with hunting I know but I'm a meat hunter. People who only hunt for the antlers/horns annoy me unless they donate the meat.
