Well I was thinking about halo:reach and I look forword to playing as some of the new eliet types but it got me thinking, given the chance I usually play as a alien or fantasy creature some examples are:

Oblivion:Argonian

neverwinter nights:Half-ork

Mission humanity:bug things

Tiberium wars:scain

Pax imperia:the guys with the hook face things.

I X2:the treat: though you are human I used alien ships

So I put to you, do you play as a human?(the stats option refers to games where humans have advantages and disadvantages like everything else)

I picked a Kajiit in Oblivion and Breton second, but a breton is close to a human so that works for me. I always pick human in other games though.

I always try and mix up my race/class combinations to get maximum replay value out of a game; plus it can add an extra dimension to your character. To use TES as an example, Orc characters are well suited to heavy combat, so why not try an Orc Mage? Conversely, Altmer have large intellects but are physically frail, and therefore an Altmer Barbarian can be an unusual (and amusing) challenge.

I say all this, but I must also own up to my first two DA:O characters, a human noble fighter and a dalish elf thief. Oh well, can't win 'em all.

I always play non-human if given the chance, I also tend to play the 'fantastic' elements as my first playthrough. (E.g. Mage, psychic etc).
If I'm going for escapism I'm going full on escapism.

Elf mage in DA:O
Khajiit jack-of-all-trades in Morrowind and Oblivion.
Adept in ME 1 & 2

You get the idea.

I have four DDO characters. Three of them are Human. My Ranger is an Elf because they get a +2 bonus to Dexterity (but unfortunately take a -2 penalty to Constitution)

...Where's the "sometimes" option? Sometimes I don't (Especially after I got a face mod for my Dark Elf class in Morrowind). But if it's something like Starcraft, I'll occasionally jump back-and-forth between the Terrans and the Zerg. Same with Sins of a Solar Empire.

No. Humans are almost always greedy, destructive creatures with little redeeming qualities. Besides, if I'm have the option not to play as something I already am, I'll take it.

Yeah I play human. It's not like playing as a different race effects gameplay that much or more importantly makes you feel like another race. If your humanoid you feel human no matter if your dwarf or argonian so it's mostly a cosmetic preference. The only games that make me feel like something else are extremes like Ecco the Dolphin or playing as the dog in Haunting Ground, I actually felt like a dog.

Yup, they usually have more fun.

Execpt when other races have skills that suit how I play better.

Yeah, I like humans

they are very interesting creatures, full of strange emotions and bodily functions

*sigh* oh how it must be to live life, a human...

Most of the time in games with choices like these, humans become the 'well-rounded' character class. I will typically always have at least one go through as a human, but I'm very inclined to seek out more exotic options first.

It depends on what you can make them look like.
I cannot stand the human models in WoW, for instance.

I almost always play as non-humans if given the option. It's just more interesting that way. Like some have said, I do the human thing all day, so in video games when there is the option I like to try something else. Not only is playing human more boring to me as far as "flavor" and coolness, but playing non-human also helps with immersion into that fictional world. It's easier to get into the feel of the environment of the game world if you start out already a step removed from normal life. And in games that are done well, its more fun to try to experience the different cultures of the more exotic races/species. So I pick non-human most times. It's when the stat bonuses for humans are really what I want for my character that I get pulled over to being a human.
