Pretty self explanatory, this one.
I pretty much hardly ever find myself putting the subtitles on for a film, but I almost always do for videogames, and I have no idea why.
I guess we're just creatures of habit, and I suppose it helps with quieter background dialogue, eh?

So whatabout you guys? Why?

[sub]Edit:Wow, that was my most blunt OP ever. Would normally have thrown some BYAAAA's and some >:]'s in there but...hey, I guess exam season does that to you.
Best of luck to everyone by the way:].[/sub]

Always for video games, simply because my position in relation to who is speaking in the world may mean I don't actually hear what's being said.

I usually do in case I mishear something. Unfortunately some of the games I play (Halo, Brink) have no in-game subtitles.

Brink at least made up for it with the ability to customize the controls, something I hardly see triple-A games doing.

Yes, but only for movies. Not always, because sometimes I forget, or I'm too lazy to switch them on, but I generally prefer it.

Video games: I, for some reason, can't seem to understand video game cutscenes without subtitles. I don't know why, I just seem to miss a lot of shit.

Films: I don't need them, but I always have them on if available. People think I'm a fucking insane for it, but I just do it out of habit now.

With videogames, but it depends on the film.

I tend to put subs on older films usually because of the poorer sound quality.

Both, due my hearing problems and not wanting to miss to miss anything the characters say.

Always for video games, when I'm watching movies people tend to be a bit more respectful but when I'm playing a game they'll just be as loud as they want, and if I turn up the TV they get all hissy. Plus the subtitles help me catch key plot stuff I may have missed otherwise, and since I can rewind a movie easily there's no problem there

Nope, I can understand people talking just fine. The only exception being foreign movies (obviously).

I go without for a while, but if a certain character is mumbling or something and I can't readily work out whats going on, then I turn subtitles on.

Yes, always for both. Pisses me off when films don't have subtitle options.

Only on films if their in another language... Obviously
For games if they're already on I'll leave them on, the only game where I actively turned on subtitles is Left 4 Dead because it's easier to see when a horde-rush or special infected is coming.

Neither. And if it comes to the point where I'd have to, I'd see it as a huge failing of the filmaker/game designer. My hearing is pretty good anyway, no problem there.

Movies no. Video games, the first time through I don't. If I can understand the dialogue, then I'll leave it off. However, some games seem to have their audio screwed up--too heavy on the static, or the music, or distorting the voice--that I can't understand so I turn the subtitles on. Dead Space 2 suffered from this. Too much noise for me to understand what was being said to me at points.
What's really annoying though is when the subtitles don't MATCH what is being said. Replays the second mission in Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. As you're about the leave the ship, a S.A.S agent says there are two contacts closing in fast.
"Fast movers. Probably Migs. Oh shi--!" and then the explosion hits. This is what you hear.
The subtitles read, "Fast Movers. Probably Migs. Oh Shit! They've opened fire! You've got to get out of there!" Annoying.

This for similar reasons. Other than people around me talking though, I also play at night when others are sleeping so I'll have the subs on and the volume low.

As for movies/TV no unless it's foreign.

I prefer using subtitles in video games because the audio mixing is generally terrible. Sound effects and BGM drown out dialogue so I can't hear what the characters are saying. At least the audio editors in film have the talent to mix the sound so that you can hear what you're supposed to hear.
