Movies, but only if they're in a different language or if I wasn't certain what a character said.

Video games, all the time, especially if you can skip through dialogue. I read fast.

Just games as I usually have my TV volume quite low so I don't always hear what is being said.

The only time I have them on in films is if it is in another language.

No, except in GTA IV, where I honestly can't understand what Little Jacob is saying. No offense to the character or the voice actor, but the dialect is just too thick.

for me it all depends on the game or movie. if it has people with strong accents or like monster/alien creatures that speak a wierd english then i put it on just in case i dont understand something.

i watch alot of foreign films and i prefer subs.

One time i watched a Anime 'Love Hina' Eng Dub and couldn't watch it to the end the voice actors were really bad. But then i look up a Jap Dub and Eng Subs and it was all good

Well aside from stuff not in English, I never use subtitles for movies or TV.

But yes video games a lot of the time I like to put subtitles on. I find it hard to hear what people say in them sometimes, and unlike a movie you can't rewind it and have people say things again. Even cut scenes you'd usually have to start from the beginning somehow, at least you can generally pause those these days. When people are talking outside of cut scenes there's all sorts of other sound effects and distractions going on, so I think it helps.

I use subtitles for both, mostly because sometimes a person doesn't talk loud enough or they don't pronounce the word right or they just talk so damn fast that I can't keep up. Mostly I use it just to make sure I know what the people are saying.

Wow. No. It really infuriates me on Portal videos when half of the screen is taken up by text. I can hear, i don't need to read.

Obv. for foreign films though

Neither. The only time I use subtitles is when I don't have any idea what someone is saying. Like in GTA IV for instance; Jacob made absolutely no sense to me so I turned on subtitles. I still didn't understand shit of what he said. Good to know.

I do use subtitles for anything foreign though.

Both, I prefer having it there in case I miss something, happens when they put accents, characters are far away, phone rings, etc.

Neither. I can understand accents very well (it comes from growing up speaking a lot of Spanglish), so text would act the same as a blemish on my screen obstructing the view.

For video games, yes. Usually there's something happening that makes hearing them properly a bit on the hard side.

Subtitles are so distracting. Unless I can't hear what they are saying, I can't really understand why people turn them on.

Both, as I find I have trouble telling what people are saying some times. My hearing is fine, but I'm just not very good at decoding the spoken word.

I'm pretty sure I started to use them when I had the simpsons box set and I couldn't hear it because I had to have it on low volume.
And after a while I started to do it with everything, even if I could hear it.
Which has led to me not being able to watch something without subtitles (if they're an option.)

I generally turn the subtitles on in video games because I will sometimes miss ambient dialog due to other ambient noises or the fact that my character was facing the wrong way or similar. That and I prefer to skim through the overly-long info-dump dialog rather than listen to the whole thing. It almost never contains any useful characterization or anything else that would render it interesting, it's just a lengthy over-explanation that I invariably can look up in my journal later should I get stuck.

I hardly ever do in movies, but I'll turn them on in story based games or RPGs with dialogue choices, since I don't want to miss anything important if I get interrupted by any loud noises.
