I do both. I can't always hear what's said even if the volume is high so I like to double my chances by using subtitles when I can. Plus I'm Swedish so subtitles and me go together like cheese and marmalade. Mmmm... cheese and marmalade sandwich... [insert drool sound a la Homer Simpson here]

games only, and then only some console games. I have dyslexia and as such I read slower than I'd like to. when watching a dialog heavy movie or Anime I can't keep up. On some console games I have it on just in case the music of background noise drowns out the speech.

Yep, but only on Videogames.

I like to know what the hell is being said. Sometimes, the words just get lost in the shuffle, and I want to know EVERYTHING that is said.

Videogames only.

For movies they distract me.
For games, often the mix is off and you can't hear clearly.

I guess that's because movies, being non-interactive make it easier for sound engineers to control the mix. Games on the other hand may have different music playing or you may be at different distances from whoever is speaking.

The kind of video games I play tend to be one step remove from Anime/Manga series anyway. Having the subtitles on make me feel like I am watching a manga series.

I play video games with subtitles on so i can catch the whole story in case I miss a key part of the conversation.

Using full captions in L4D is so much of an advantage that not having them on makes it where you might as well turn your monitor off.

movies only.
although some movie subtitles do miss words and simplify them which kind of annoys me.

It really all depends to be honest. For movies it's usually a given as I always prefer to listen to the original language track. For games, well it's all on how intrusive the subtitles are on screen or how frequent they are (ie: seeing the text to a random NPC's taunt pop up is not something that holds my interest). RPGs tend to do it right as the text is either in a small enough font or placed well enough, where as games like Borderlands took up way too much of the screen in my opinion (mainly a factor as I play in the lower end of the resolution spectrum in PC games.)

Then again, I am currently playing the Witcher in Polish, so subtitles are kind of a given.

I use subtitles for video games for a few reasons: until recently we've had a crappy old TV and because of it, half the sound was missing so you had to move the camera around during dialogues to hear both sides (applies only for console).
Also, you never know when a neighbour/someone on the street is going to be noisy, which tend to happen during critical times.
Then there is the fact that some voice actors just cannot pronounce their lines properly, making whatever they say undecipherable.
And there's the fact that sometimes you get either some hidden dialogue that's not being said, or you get the complete sentence of a guy who gets killed mid-sentence.
Lastly, English isn't my native language, so I want to see what's being said in case I can't understand when a particular word is said (doesn't happen as often as it used to, but still).

Both.

I watch a number of German and Japanese programs, so I'm used to having subs in the video. Even in English, I keep them active for the sake of literacy and to see how accurate they are to the source material.

For games, I always turn them on, unless it's a horror game that makes the bad habit of revealing what the specters around me are saying.

Both but only occasionally.

Sometimes I'm in a situation where I can't have the volume too loud do to sleeping family or it's difficult to catch everything they say without them. I prefer not to have them on but when it is apparently necessary, I do not hesitate. They don't bother me at all.

I usually do for videogames. For movies, I only turn on subtitles if the film's in a foreign language. However, I watch a lot of films that aren't in English, so I end up using subtitles more often than not.

Yes for both, because sometimes I just can't understand what people say and don't want to miss the dialouge. Assassin's Creed 2 is a good example. With all the Italian, I would have been completely lost without the subtitles.

Always for video games but not for movies. I only have subtitles on for movies if it's in a foreign language.
