Mix really. While I do prefer Eastern animation than Western but it can get dull watching Eastern all the time no matter how good the style and quality it is. So every so oftern it nice to watch a few Western animation.
If we were talking about production behind the animation than it Eastern for sure. Eastern are usually 13 -25 or more episode while Western are normally 13 episodes (not all of them). Eastern tend to stick to finishing the episodes throughout the months but Western take a "break" inbetween which is really annoying (I guessing the team in Japan are alot bigger compare to Western).

When it comes to mature animation? Japan, definitely. They have a much more evolved sense of maturity going into their animation than most of any Western style will ever want to try to conceive (the West has too much "but animation is for kids!" mentality). There is a reason, no less, why their market is so much larger in this category.

Honestly speaking, the most Western animation has really given me in terms of appreciation.. well, would be things like Justice League/Unlimited or Avatar, if only for sake of actually having mature characters having mature lives and consequences during the plot.

But I'll take whatever I can get, as long as the story and characters are well developed.

Had you asked me this 8 years ago I would've said Japanese animataion, but I'm afraid anime has become extremely complacent recently.

In terms of pure animation quality the West has always been better, eventhough Japan can be just as good (look at Akira), they just choose to work more effeciently. But Japan always had an edge over the West with their unique visuals, stories and action. However, they seemed to have lost this edge since almost all of the anime released today is aimed at either the shonen or fanservice crowd.

The only high profile Japanese animated movies released today come from Ghibli. Movies with the quality of Akira, Ghost in the Shell or Ninja Scroll have completely disappeared. It wasn't untill I saw Rebuild of Evangelion 2 that I was reminded of the days of splendorously animated anime.

The West on the other hand has overcome two major cruxes which plagued its animation all the way through the 80's and 90's. When you look at most western animated movies from before the 2000's they're usually quite short in length and they're patronizing. Even cartoons with a rather adult subject matter like The Secret of N.I.M.H. never really took their time to calmly tell a story, but instead raced through the narrative in a span of 70 minutes. But these days (mainly thanks to Pixar) western cartoons have become feature length movies that can easily tackle serious matters.

So I'm going to have to choose for western animation.

PIXAR

That hardly covers the topic of "animation."
How? Pixar IS animation. It's what they do. And they're a western company, I think I have my bases covered for this topic. I'm talking about animation, you're talking about cartoons.
pony snip
Cartoon - A motion picture using animation techniques to photograph a sequence of drawings rather than real people or objects. (FYI: Drawings are 2D)

3D animation is half the industry, so I don't understand how Pixar "hardly covers" animation.

I was joking about the thread topic. I'm not an anime fan. I don't have to like something to respect it though. If it weren't for computers, we wouldn't have 3D animation.

Walt Disney is my god.

Also, I do know what animation is...

I'm a mix, I like both but there are times where I lean towards Japanese animation depending on my mood. Western animation doesn't always have bat-shit crazy shows like the Japanese do, but sometimes that's a good thing.

Samurai Jack is awesome and so is Outlaw Star.

Everything's about moderation, I suppose.

The epitome of that would be someone like Genndy Tartakovski. Animator/Director who is undoubtedly western in his animation as a whole but GREATLY influenced by both eastern anime and things like classic Kurosawa films to things like Sergio Leone spaghetti westerns. All coming together in probably the most beautiful mix of simplicity in design but complexity in delivery- the perfect example of the perfection of his work being Samurai Jack. End result of all his homage to the greats and beautiful presentation is more badass than any amount of intricate detail or big, flashy exhibitions

Well I've seen a lot more Eastern animated shows that I like but as far as animated movies go my favorite is American Pop...

Than again Serial Experiments Lain is eastern and it tops my list of greatest things ever... even above gourmet cheeses and flying v's with tremolos...
I in fact have a flying V with a tremolo. (^^)

OT: I went with eastern because off the quoted reasons and my avatar might cry.

Typically I like the anime I like for the action and story, while I like the cartoons I like for the comedy. In fact aside from Excel Saga, the only other anime I like for the comedy is Shin-chan, but most of the jokes were written by Americans in the dub, so I don't think that counts. There are a few western cartoons that I like for the drama and action, most prominently the DCAU and Avatar.

Of course, like several others have said before me, there are countless western comedy cartoons that are awful (75% of the stuff [AS} shows these days for starters) and countless animes where the story and/or action are just crap: Inuyasha, Sailor Moon, Evangelion (YEA I SAID IT! I HATE EVANGELION!), and others just don't do it for me. Even then, some shows I like sometimes and don't like at other times, and some shows I liked at first but grew to hate (ie Bleach when I realized it was just another DBZ clone with a little Yu Yu Hakusho mixed in).

In short, while these days I tend to watch a lot more western cartoons than anime, I'd say that among my favorites it's an even mix.

I could only find one with the stock bridge... I've been looking for a floating bridge maybe but I don't want to go through the whole modification process of carving and sanding so I may go with the tail piece connecting to the bar the connects the legs...

I lean more towards anime. Japanese animations are more likely to target an adult demographic than Western animations, and that's generally what I look for. A majority of adult animated shows in the west are comedies, and the style of comedy in these shows doesn't normally appeal to me. I have enjoyed Western animations in the past though, such as Avatar and Samurai Jack.

Modification is the most terrifying thing in the world especially with £750 ($1,213 approx) on the line. The first time I tried changing the pick-ups on my ESP I will ever forget.

I'm ok at with the more harder stuff now though I think it was just beginners bad luck. I would say take the easier option.^^

I still need too replace the neck of my other guitar, it fell of the wall stand and suffered shit loads of damage. Its more or less in two pieces, just haven't got around to fixing it.

Western... In my experience you can completely remove the cast of a random anime and replace it with another and not really tell the difference.

If you did the same with western animation you could end up with the cast of Invader Zim on the setting of My Little Pony. There is obviously something strange with that.

Also, I've never found anything on an anime funny... Even slightly.

I'm not really a cartoon watcher to begin with, but since anime has no point in my life and I have no desire to watch, it, I'd go with western I guess.

I don't really have a problem with the electronics, I change my guitar pickups fairly frequently and have several different loaded pick guards my favorites being my EMG active setup and P90 single coil, but it's just anything that has to do with cutting off pieces of it that I have a problem with... but I got mine for a good price anyway just over $300 which is even less than it's Epiphone counter part that I had before...<.<

Cultural differences play a big role in release schedules. In Japan, a show is considered a failure if it does not air weekly. This puts a huge strain on the animators to push out new episodes. This also means that it is responsible for much of the shoddy animation and filler episodes.

In North America, shows live or die by their ratings. If a cartoon series does not have strong ratings or good quality, it will die. Look at the reboot of Ren and Stimpy from 2003. The show only had three episodes produced, and was cancelled in under a month
