I dunno where I stand, really. For the most part, I hate turn based combat, but finally beating Xenosaga Ep. 1 lessened the hatred a bit. I don't really like the whole open-world gajillion side-quest games like Oblivion and Fable, but the two Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance games and Champions of Norrath games for PS2 were some of my favorites on the system. That said, I'm currently playing Star Ocean: The Last Hope, and I love the combat system, if the voice acting is a bit atrocious at times.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that I give each game a chance to impress me. Most of the more modern WRPGs have not. I haven't played a Final Fantasy game except for about a dozen hours of FFX, in which I got stuck on a boss because I missed a weapon in a shop in an area I couldn't go back to. My main issue with some JRPGs is that if you don't have a walkthrough, some of them are damn near impossible.

Thank you. Saved me around 10 seconds of my life.

No seriously, I absolutely hate JRPG's. I hate them almost as much as Yahtzee does.
Couldn't possibly agree more.
I'm glad. You seriously don't know how much I despise JRPG's.. I almost had a heart attack when my friend said FF XIII is better than God of War 3.

Love them both, though I have more experience with western RPGs. Most western RPGs I can enjoy, while Japanese are often hit or miss.

Western.

Jap RPG's generally have better story, but i hate, and have always hated, turn based combat. Games are always better with a bit of action involved.

I like both but I tend to lean towards the JRPG side, I like turn based combat and they tend to have better stories. Not to say WRPGs are bad in the story department, Jade Empire still has one of my top 5 favorite stories and a good JRPG should have just as much to do as a WRPG in terms of sidequests. They both have there flaws but at the end of the day I'm going to go with JRPG's.

Well that saves me having to go on a long, drawn out rant to try and illustrate my point. Gimme a good old Western RPG any day of the week, so my character can do what my character wants.

I feel like JRPG's like to get you so into a story that they sometimes shun gameplay/battle mechanics (I'm looking at you FFXIII.) Also, they tend to be more linear (once again looking at you FFXIII, 20+ hours till I finally got alittle open world?!).

I like JRPG's, but I think I tend to sway more towards western RPG's.

I like JRPG's because the stories always felt more personal to me, I feel sad when a character dies. In western RPG's I never get emotional when a character dies because there was no connection to begin with.
No connection? You should get a copy of Baldur's Gate 2 and play that, now. I personally never feel any connection with JRPG characters. I think the closest I came to liking my JRPG characters was in FF3, then again, I pretty much stopped playing JRPGs after that because they look ridiculous. The fighting takes place in some imaginary realm -- this happened on early gaming platforms because they wanted to show some freaking detail in the monsters and couldn't do that if they were itty-bitty sprites on the map, technology has moved forward, we don't need to go to Never Never Land to fight in an RPG these days. [/rant]

Also, to the people who complain about the lack of turn-based combat in Western RPGs, it was still there in the BG series you just have to enable the breaking points.

Edit: We really need to tighten down the definition of RPG in general. I'm getting annoyed by all the action/adventure games with upgradable stats being lumped in with my RPGs. Just because you have stats that you can increase through play doesn't make it an RPG. I played Demon's Souls for a few hours (it threw away my bloodstain and 10k souls, so I quit), and from what I saw it's not an RPG as I use the term. Maybe later in there is actual role-playing, but what I saw was a reflex-based hack-and-slash with upgradable stats.

RPG's are RPG's and we shouldn't- nah, just kidding, RPG's are my favs, even though FF13 threw away my hopes I still love the FF series and many other RPG's. (FF is the most prominent because there are lots of them, they aren't the only RPG's I've played)

I have kinda mixed feelings on this. JRPG's are very fun and over-the-top delightful for me. However a lot of them really seem to downplay girls, and/or dress them in a fashion that makes me wonder if the game creator wasn't just looking for a reason to stick a teenish-looking girl in a catgirl-maid outfit.

WRPG's are fun too, however they aren't without their faults either. All the heroes seem to be the same person, or are completely unremarkable. Or, the kiss-of-death, British Colonial Accents (I'm looking at YOU Peter Molyneux). That's not to say that those kinds of things are bad, but as they say: familiarity breeds contempt. And peter molyneux.

Where the hell is "other"?...

I like RPGs if they are good. Doesn't matter where they were made and in which setting or style. If I think it's enjoyable, I'll play it! I could say both, but it sorta doesn't feel right cause I really don't "love" all RPGs. I'm very picky.
