Western RPG's by far. JRPG's are totally unappealing to me in pretty much every area. I've never played one, and probably never will.

I don't really prefer one over the other. There are great RPGs from both the western and the Japanese side of the genre. I don't think one is justifiably better than the other. Instead, I appreciate them both for what they are and what they contribute to the genre as a whole.

Right now, Japanese. The last few RPGs I've played have been JRPGs, and I've enjoyed/am enjoying them all. I've only really enjoyed Fallout 3 in terms of WRPGs.

Both and neither. I love JRPGs because the story often has a more "epic" feel to it. The world moves in perceptible ways as the story progresses. Your characters grow with the story and I often find myself able to form closer connections with JRPG characters.

I love the WRPGs, well I'll admit it I love the Bioware RPGs because of much the same reason.

I play most games for the story, so when people complain about the linearity of some RPGs, I really don't notice.

BTW Lost Odyssey, that is all.

I peronally love improved personal input you get with a good western RPG and the story tends to be better paced; i.e. you can choose when you do the main quest and when to do side quests unlike in JRPGs where you do some story for a couple of disks and suddenly you get your magic-flying-teleporter-beast-of-burden and do all the side-quests and such in one lump sum before finishing the game massively over-powered with all the best gear.

However JRPGs are just a whole lot MORE game for your money (I must have spent a month of actual game time on the FF series alone), the stories are a whole lot better (most of the time in WRPGs I can't be bothered with the story and never really 'complete' the game - looking at you Elder Scrolls) the characters are more interesting (even the annoying ones), the side-quests really appeal to my OCD "gotta catch 'em all" side and the combat is more tactical and you can really feel the characters leveling up.

However it tends to be western RPGs that really really just get it right; appalause for ME I & II Neverwinter Nights (only the 1st one) and Dragon Age.

OT: scratch that; why isn't there a I love Bioware option?

A western RPG involves role-playing. A Japanese RPG is a linear adventure game with numbers.
Thank you. Saved me around 10 seconds of my life.

No seriously, I absolutely hate JRPG's. I hate them almost as much as Yahtzee does.
Couldn't possibly agree more.
I'm glad. You seriously don't know how much I despise JRPG's.. I almost had a heart attack when my friend said FF XIII is better than God of War 3.
I've gotta admit, I have played most of FF XIII and did enjoy it, mostly because it's not so much turn based anymore as it is "charge your attacks". However for the God of War 3 comparison I can't comment as i've not played it as i don't own a PS3 / Xbox 360 (being a PC whore ^^) and only played FF on a friends.

And thusly yet another example of why Narutards aren't allowed an opinion on gaming was set forth.
Ok, let me correct myself. Morrowind and Oblivion bored the hell out of me. I did not enjoy them one bit. I haven't played the games before them so I can't judge them. That better?

And Narutard? Seriously, that's the best you can come up with to insult someone?
Well, I suppose it is a pretty good way to take a shot at an anime fan, what with Naruto being the personification of all that is wrong with anime.

Theoretically I love both. Practically I've spent way more time playing JRPGs so that's where my vote has to go if I am being honest.

Western vs Eastern...(sigh) Its a hard question really. I've played both and like them both, but the fact there is such a major difference between them does make them seem worlds apart despite them being the same kin. Like non-identical twins...one got into goth music and the other one got into pop music...

Are you talking about Naruto or the Elder Scrolls?
naruto.
Well at the start it was alright, but now it just keeps going and going and going and going and going and going and going and going and going and I think you can see what comes next. It's the same problem I have with Bleach. They've just kept going, but the ideas have pretty much dried up and we're left with what used to be good.

It should just end already.

Of course, that's just my view on it. Some people like series like that, if they didn't it wouldn't be so bloody popular and have words invented for it.

Both "genres" are full of cliches. Yet I have examples of both that I liked (Fallout, Dragon Quest 8). I preffer mostly JRPG because they have more variety.

Japanese RPGs aren't evolving, they're doing the same stuff they've always done except with better graphics.
Because it is not like WRPG hasn't rehashed Tolkien in pseudo-medieval times over and over again.
