I read manuals because the games I play tend to be nightmarishly complex and only through reading the manual can I save myself dozens of hours of "wait, how does that work?" The alternative is losing/doing badly because I didn't understand how the game elements worked together.

If I rented the game, chances are the manual isnt in the box.

If I bought the game, if the manual looks appealing enough, I'll read it.

If I buy a game then take the bus back home I'll flick through the manual. There have been only one or two times I've looked in the manual if something in the game confuses me, these being exclusively PC games.

Not counting this however, I use the manual as a reference when writing for wikipedia.

I always read the instructions when I install a game, though I mostly just look at the picture and read the text lazily.

Yeah, it builds my excitement. I remember reading the Fallout3 manual on the tube going home from work. Didn't have a clue what was going on and still didn't remember there was a pipboy light.

I may glance at it occasionally if I'm confused on how to do something (and usually the manual is >helpful). Most of the stuff in the manuals is covered in in-game tutorials now-a-days, makes one wonder why they even bother with manuals.

Depends if it come with one. I bought Crysis in the Maximum Edition pack, so no paper manual. Games bought off of Steam I don't, because they're normally in digital format aswell, if at all. But they come with in-game tutorials aswell.

Not really, generally because all the games I usually play are easy to figure out on the instructions anyways. If I'm stumped at the controls for instance, I'd refer to the manual then.

Sometimes, when the game is complicated. I read the WoW manual to get a quick grasp of the basics, and it helped me get started. The amount of questions asked by 'noobs' (I hate that word, but it's use is justified here) in trade channel which would easily be answered by reading the damned manual before you start playing is just....uncountably high, quite annoying.

I almost never read the manuals of sequels or pretty basic games (except for shits & giggles every now and then), like shooters. Even though Resistance 2 was my first PS3 games, I didn't touch it manual. Why would I? It's an FPS, can't be that hard, even on a console I never played on before. And whatya' now, it wás easy.

yes, i tend to do so.

i have to do something on the ride home from the shop. and reading is fun.

also, it's amazing what people miss if they don't read instruction manuals. when i didn't read them, i ended up on some games not knowing some of the real basics. once i read it, the majority of games became considerably easier.

Yes, I must be informed of the game's controls, just before I realized the button that does the ultimate attack was the suicide button at the last boss at 99% damage.

i only read it for 2 reasons. (1) I need to know somthing (like splinter cell, and i learned about the "airfoil rounds"), or (2) its really interesting (like fallout 3)

I almost always read the manual.

The manuals for GTA and No More Heroes kept me entertained until I got home and played them.
