I like to know as much as possible about the game before playing it. I particularly like the character bios and the back story etc: You get a lot more out of the game if you read the manual rather then thinking you are already good enough to get into the game straight away

I flick through the manual when I buy a game, if I see something I like I read further into it.

Sometimes. If the game takes a while to load, I'll give it a read, or if the manual has something that sets it apart, or is interesting, like Metal Gear Solid's little manual mangas, then I'll give that a read as well.

I just read them because its part of the experience of getting a new game. At least for me. Its my weird little ritual

Something nice to read while a game is loading, most of the time I'll know how it's going to work anyway.

I only read it after I've started playing.
Unless I'm the passenger in a car and have nothing else to read.
The phrase "took the words right out of my mouth" springs to mind...

I only read the manual if I think it might improve my enjoyment of the game (ie. gives me instructions that aren't already in the introduction...) or if I'm bored on the way home from buying the game.

Well, assuming that something in the game has confused me and I skipped the dialog box that was explaining it, then yes I do. I also take a look sometimes to see if there is anything else worthwhile aside gameplay mechanics and control explanations. Another example would be with the Wario games where I ALWAYS take a look because the manual is written with the assumption that Wario is talking to you (I can be such a sucker for all things Wario :p)

I can easily play a game without one, but I might learn a thing or two I wouldn't if I do, however, often I do for the fun of it. Such as reading the hero biographies of Empire Earth, or silly descriptions of the people in Stronghold 2, such as this; "Brewer: She brews the ale for your inns. The brewer has a problem focusing and walking straight. She regularly tastes what she brews and gets into trouble for shouting slurred insults at strangers in the street."

I like game manuals..

I like to read them. Sometimes they contain little extra morsels of story or character/equipment descriptions. But I hardly give them another thought once read.

Sometimes, if the manual is very well done.
As an example, Blizzard tends to include little story fragments of the background of the game in their manuals, I really enjoyed reading those.
