How i define CMS:

Anytime where people are forced into military service without an overhanging threat for the countries safety.

So, do you support CMS?

Me? I don´t. Frankly, it´s not right to force people into something they don´t want. That´s all i got to say.
Not unless you're Israel.

And a world government? if power corrupts then imagine what that much power would do to someone.

And even then its crappy idea- humans are tribal and it still wouldnt eliminate the "us and them" mentality.
Thats why It wont happy anytime soon. And its not a crappy idea, its the only good idea for our prosperous future as a race.

Professional armies made up by motivated volunteers are the way to go, so no for that reason already.

As well as the encroachment on personal freedom to serve society in what ways you yourself deem fit, which in most first world countries are probably going to be more useful than rolling around in ditches learning to kill people anyway.

The problem here is that you are not factoring in the fact that we are all human. And many, many, many humans are complete assholes. It is true, and imagine one of these such people getting into power, think a corrupt politician affecting the WHOLE WORLD. And the people in the "world government" would still have their homeland's interests at heart, and you would find the countries with fewer representatives would just be forgotten and left off even worse than they are now. Imagine the stress a president would be under, ruling THE WHOLE WORLD. Imagine if he used the world army to enforce his little regime, he would have the whole planets military, and make the whole planet a police state.
Finally, the bureaucracy, the red tape, the logistics if you had to have all the world's business et cetera approved by one government. It is madness to the extreme. It would have to be broken down, and then if you do that, why not just have the old countries again?

TL;DR, too much for one government to handle.

Of course national service would have to be compulsory; otherwise what's the point in it? if it's optional it's just normal military service.

I think it would be a good idea; all 16-19 year olds would be expected to serve 1-2 years in non front-line theatres.

This would lead to

1. employment for the period (taking this age group out of the benefits system) and give the people money to start their career/education after they finish

2. Life skills - the forces would train up these people with various skills which would help boost their chances at employment outside of the military. Would also improve attitudes that are sometimes lacking in teenagers today.

3. recruitment levels - people who don't think the military is for them may find that they actually enjoy what they do and decide to continue to serve after their time is up

4. relief of proper soldiers - as NS troops would be assigned to non-frontline posts the soldiers that would usually be posted there would be freed up to serve in areas where troops are stretched.

* Sorry if TL was arguing these points with a friend earlier.

Logic and common sense. We started as individuals forming small groups then we started to create villages, form tribes, small states, uniting them together etc. We have European Union, African Union, South American Union, Arab Union forming, North American Free Trade Agreement etc.

The next logical step would uniting the continents (the facto) and then the whole planet don't you agree ? But that wont happen soon, not even in 100 years.

Me neither. I'm really glad they took it out in my country. Otherwise i would have had to keep dodging it until i was 35. That would have sucked.

Whilst I find your idea interesting I dont agree with it and whats more your reasoning is vague- civilisation may of marched on but human nature has not, despite the world growing smaller with the formation of nations the basic human instinct to create a small community still prevails, people still organise themselves into small social circles or cliques or communities.

Plus Id like to hear how you factor in the inevitable corruption that occurs in people who have power- put someone in a world parliament and the power they have would be astronomical and therefore so would be the resulting corruption.

In which country did you serve because in my (Germany) i made the opposite experience and the friends of me who are career soldiers agree on this subject. But that being said it's only recently that the german army opened itself for female soldiers (outside of supporting and medical positions)
United States. I remember when Germany was really restrictive about the jobs women could have, but it seems like we've fallen behind you since recent years.

for small countries, definitely. Countries with a larger population don't have to worry that much about actually getting a sizeable army. These things, however you look at it, are necessary even in this day and age.
So to answer your question: depends?

I've heard a few stories from some friends here in Sweden about people they knew during service having their hands blown off, knife fights and live bullets being fired in the food hall..
Now try dealing with those thoughts when you're taking your six month year old son to bed.
I dont know how many times I've appologised to him for getting with a Swedish Woman..

Big fat noooooo.

Sorry, but unless my country really, really needs me (i.e. World War feckin' 3), I'm not joining the military.
I agree with this.

If my country is being invaded/occupied or if there is another world war, then I wouldn't mind (I'd probably volunteer). Otherwise they shouldn't force it on you for no goddamn reason, your life is on the line after all.

i think it couldnt hurt to have it compulsory for some people. Like you either go to school then uni. or get a job or apprenticeship. If you cant do either of those you get chucked i the army. Like if your under 25 you cant get unemployment benefits for extended periods of time.

Cause in the army you get paid and trained in something like mechanics or building or something like that and when you get out you have a qualification.
