Just curious to see if other people take days off work to play a game when it first comes out. When Skyrim was released I knew 7 people who took that day off, and 2 of the took the whole week off. Both made up excuses, one said his family was going on vacation and the other said he had to go visit his sick grandparents. That same friend already asked off for this coming week for ME3 under the guise of a funeral in another state I think. I've done it quite a few times but only asked off for the day it came out and the next (to get my sleep). I don't wanna argue morality or anything like that, but I just wanna know if anyone else has made up an excuse to play their game.

Yup, I occasionally do. And it works out great since release days are usually on Tuesdays and the trend in the company is for people to use sick days on Fridays and Mondays. A good 'ole Tuesday through Wednesday double sick day combo usually looks legit.

Nope, I never have. The game will still be there after work and I would rather use my vacation days to go on vacation and travel.

I've stayed up WAAAAY too late to play games, rendering my next work day terribly unproductive if that counts...

No, because no game is worth me using up a system that was made for real emergencies. And I usually have enough free time after work to enjoy any game I want.

No, in fact I get kind of annoyed when stuff like that happens. Last semester, I had a professor who actually canceled class because he knew half the class would be playing Skyrim.

Sorry, but I'm not paying for school so that I can lose a class period to a game I don't even care about.

Last week, two games that I really wanted game out. Do you know where they are right now? Not in my house, because I ordered them. They'll probably get here on Monday. I'll play them on Monday when my classes are done, and I'll probably throw in a couple hours on Tuesday 'cause I'm free that day.

Wednesday, I'm gonna be in class, with maybe a little Devil Survivor 2 between classes because that's what breaks are for.

I know I'm venting and this isn't supposed to be a super serious topic, but in my eyes, people who display that kind of irresponsibility are part of the reason why people who play video games aren't taken seriously in society.

No, I'm a responsible person who doesn't lie to his workplace to play games.

I have to say it's really childish and irresponsible to do that, I get you enjoy games but it is no reason to not show up to work just for your own enjoyment.

It's not like you can't play the game when you go home.
What if you use actual vacation days? That way it's not lying saying you are sick or something else. When I would take those two days off I'd put down as reason either vacation or personal time. I worked at a movie theater so it wasn't like I had a set amount of actual vacation days or something like that. The managers were gamers also so they didn't mind as long as I didn't do it frequently. I think it depends on the job too and how often/long you work. My friend who's a mechanic work 6 days a week and 10-12hr a day so he doesn't get much time to play games unless he does take days off :/

I don't think I've done that but I bet I have.

EDIT: Maybe I did when I was younger, I just don't remember doing it.

I did once, don't remember what game though. But then, I never take sick days. As of now I have around 11 unused sick days and get 8 more in August. My boss has no problem with me using one from time to time as long as I present a validish excuse, since I'm a reliable employee.

I very rarely do...though I can't remember the last time I did it, I most certainly will this coming Tuesday, and I really don't care at all if people call me irresponsible. I'm old enough to make my own decisions and I can afford to take a day off from work.

Never done it intentionally, but the day Skyrim came out I was under the weather and worked from home. At lunch I went out and bought it (I had been planning on waiting for a couple of weeks in the hopes of getting a better deal)

I still did my full day's work before starting, although I did start it installing before I clocked off

When I was younger, maybe.

I won't do something so irresponsible now. Seriously, if I skip two math classes I feel like I skipped two months worth of math classes. Catching up is too much of a pain.

Going to school regularly actually leaves me more time to play the loved game.

I like games and I like booze and to cater to these two hobbies, I have a rule: Never take work off due to hangover or gaming. Down that path lies madness.

While I've never pulled a sicky, though more due to guilt and fear of being caught, I do use my holiday time for big releases or if its coming up to the end of the year and haven't used my full allowance. I prefer long weekends and because games in the UK are normally on a Friday a 3 day weekend is nice everyone once in a while.

I can't say I've ever done that. However, I'm considering using two weeks of annual leave (or "vacation days", if that's what you call them) to play Baldur's Gate 2 later in the year. It's just not the kind of game I want to have to play only a few hours per night.

Although when my new computer was getting delivered last year, I took a "work from home" day. It was going fine until the computer came at about 11:30AM... then I didn't do any more work for the rest of the day.

When TBC,Wotlk, cata was released pretty much half the class was sick and the rest of the class was playing cata in school. Was almost the same with skyrim.

Nope, I've never done it. While I may be itching to play the game, I know that it'll be waiting for me when I get home. And I find the work week goes by pretty quickly so I know that my lazy Saturday and Sunday afternoons of gaming are not that far off.
