Yeah, the Beatles came back.

Not that they ever left...
The Beatles Collection doesn't count as bringing John Lennon back to life.
I meant the entire Beatles music came back to our hearts and minds.
Beatles Day seemed a bit like a marketing stunt for The Beatles Rock Band to me. If you don't mean this one, what DO you mean?

The recent albums by animal collective, atlas sound, future of the left, grizzly bear, dananananakroyd, onedia, lightning bolt ... and loads of others have been pretty excellent.
There's been some great pop music out, I mean everyone here probably hates lady gaga & shakira and stuff but you can't deny it's catchy as.

I mean, I've not been listening to a lot of new music this year, been getting lost checking out older bands that I've missed but I've heard some VERY good albums and songs that have made me ridiculously happy.

Classic rock types are gonna say no anyway, and I get the feeling that there's loads of them about. I just think it's kinda sad when people focus all of their energy on complaining about how everything isn't as good as the 70's or whatever.

Um, yes and no. Yes for certain genres and those that like them, no for others that don't particularly like them. For me it has been a bit average. Some good things came from more established bands (Dream Theater's Count of Tuscany is the best song since Octavarium, and the album itself was better than Systematic Chaos). The problem for me is that the bands I like aren't really getting all that much playtime on the TV and radio, so I am inundated with this post-punk emo and new rave kinds of music. Some of which is just painful (all time low- headlining the Kerrang Tour in UK!). Its a little too subjective. Finally, N-Dubz came to fruition in UK .... this stuff sells somehow!

I did mean that. I know my friends and I have not heard many Beatles songs until Rock Band, and so now that we enjoy their music, we've decided to play the entire Abbey Road album. Before then, I may have just continued playing my hard rock and my loud music.

EDIT: And by "Not that they ever left..." I meant they were always awesome, even when we didn't know it.

Man, I can't wait for all the classic rock guys to come in and rage against all the pop stuff that was out this year =P
Here I am! :)

OP: It's all crap. Metal, pop, rap, etc. are all just different genres that follow a very specific formula that discourages creativity, they just appeal to different demographics but they are all equally uncreative.
They may follow a specific formula, but I'd go as far as say it's a fact that genres like prog rock/metal have a lot fewer rules in therms of structure, and thus are more likely to come up with something creative. Another thing is that bands like Mastodon have tried to reinvent the formula with their latest album "Crack The Skye", and I'd say they've been very successful. I agree with you to some extent when you say rap, pop and metal follows a specific formula, but what metal lacks in originality it gains in therms of raw energy in the music, as opposed to your average RnB/pop song which has been stripped of all it's energy in the studio.
I maintain that metal is just the same as rap and pop because both of those genres are about pure energy as well, metal just thrives on negative or aggresive energy to please it's base instead of pop's overly-positive energy and rap's "Dancability" energy; the problem is that they are all energy and no substance. I would, however, like to hear an example of this "Prog Rock" of which you speak (Man I sound old :p) the "Prog" stands for "Progressive" correct? I'm always open to new things.

Good year for metal.

Worst year in my memory for pop.

Damn autotune to hell, and I hope it takes Akon, La Rue and Chris Brown with it.

I sure know I do, Porcupine Tree, Between The Buried and Me, Dream Theater, Alice in Chains, Mastodon, Megadeth and Muse in one year! What's even more surprizing is the fact that none of them were dissapointments, to me, at least. It's almost too good to be true. I don't follow the charts all that much, so I have no idea if pop music has been as horrible as the last couple of years, but from my taste of music it has been a fantastic year.
dont forget slayer

The new Between the Buried and Me is almost too good.

Mars Volta's Octahedron is a pretty tough listen, but it grew on me.

Silversun Pickups' new album was all right. That's about all I can say.

All in all, I think it's been a pretty good year so far.

The energy I feel listening to metal is anything but negative.

Sure some of it is angry, but it's a release channel for the anger, therefore positive.

Metal makes me feel energised, happy and alive.

not at all, i hate the newcomers of this year and no bands or singers i like have done anything new. Jonathan coulton remains to leave his new album unfinished, Iron maiden keep sayin they will start their next album next year, dragonforce will be erased from earth until 2011 when they will rise from the pits of all to release an album that sounds the same as the last (which i will buy) and tenacious hardly exist anymore. all in all this year has been bad i have been listenin to old music all year because things such as pokerface make me lose all hope in humanity
