We're still making music in 2009? I stopped paying attention. ;)
If you search you will find some goodies. If you like metal and progressive rock you should check out some of the albums I mentioned for wouldyoukindly, it might give you some more faith in modern music.

I think my preferred type of music [http://www.di.fm/wma/trance.asx] is likely never going to be mainstream.

If they hate it so much I don't see why they bother checking it out.
Because shops tend to play it, so you hear it as soon as you go in whether you want to or not.

Porcupine Tree, Muse, and the new Weezer all made me smile. But Green Day broke my heart yet again. Oh how I miss the days of Dookie and Insomniac.

Different people have different taste, I for one can't stand trance.

Beyonce, David Guetta, Lady GaGa, Britney Spears, Rihanna, Jordin Sparks and all the rest. No I don't think this year has been good. Then again I'm a rock snob so I will never be happy again.

This song however did make it a tad more gruesome than the past few years.. How could he...

OP: It's all crap. Metal, pop, rap, etc. are all just different genres that follow a very specific formula that discourages creativity, they just appeal to different demographics but they are all equally uncreative.
Woah woah woah.. Hey now..

You could easily say all genres follow a specific formula to appeal to a different demographic. In fact, that's kind of the whole idea.

All music has a formula in one way or another. The Blues is pretty much all the same but that doesn't make it any less great.

Oh yeah, it's been a good year. Pray For Villains (DevilDriver's most recent album) was released, and has some of my favorite songs on it.

I sure know I do, Porcupine Tree, Between The Buried and Me, Dream Theater, Alice in Chains, Mastodon, Megadeth and Muse in one year! What's even more surprizing is the fact that none of them were dissapointments, to me, at least. It's almost too good to be true. I don't follow the charts all that much, so I have no idea if pop music has been as horrible as the last couple of years, but from my taste of music it has been a fantastic year.
That's odd, you just took all the bands I was gonna mention on coming into this thread.

Oh, and Paramore, oh how I love Paramore. (Closely followed by The Great Misdirect, then Crack the Skye, then Black Clouds).

Depending on what kind of a rock snob you are I could give you some recomendations, the band Airbourne has been called the next AC/DC. If you know where to look I'm sure you'll find something that's for your liking. Timbaland makes me cry for what he's doing to pop music, I generally try to stay the hell away from it.

they only thing that could help this year is if John Lennon and George Harisson rise from the grave and if Paul McCartny and Ringo Star's youth are restored

and if Sgt. Pepper's Lonley Hearts Club Band really existed

Nice to see someone who likes some good music.
Njaard likes your taste of music +5 friendliness.
Njaard dislikes your opinion of Paramore -1 respect for your music taste.

EDIT: That seemed like a better idea before I posted it oO

There have been quite a few good release this year on the hip-hop front. But I'm not up to date with the current music in other genres. It's been pretty good, IMO.

Yep. With albums from Gallows, The Ghost of a Thousand, Alice in Chains, Dead Swans, Architects and Them Crooked Vultures I'd say it's been a pretty good year. Much better than I expected.

Bring Me The Horizon on the other hand... poor show. Very poor show. Proof that yet again remix albums are a BAD IDEA!
Man, i don't care what they say, Alice in Chains are not Alice in Chains without Layne Stayley. Also I haven't heard the crooked vultures album yet, better not be a disappointment.

BTBAMs new CD was pretty good. Not as good as colors but still respectable. The best album of the year imo came from August Burns Red. Very nice to see Every Time I Die put out a really good album after their last one was kinda disappointing.
What I like about The Great Misdirect is that it's a lot more focused than Colors, but it lacks the raw emotion of the latter. Unfortunately I haven't been able to check out the new ABR and EID.
See I think it is the opposite. I think they started to go down the musical masturbation road on some of the songs in The Great Misdirect while I loved how colors was one long song. Ya the new ETID is really good and ABR definitely put out their best record to date. The guitars are sooooo much better in Constellations.
Personally I found the whacky sections of Color somewhat damaging to the flow of the songs, in The Great Misdirect they keep it to one song. I consider Colors and The Great Misdirect to be equals in therms of musical quality, they just do it in two different ways. I don't know if The Great Misdirect will last as long as Colors, though, because Colors has been a frequent listen since it was released. Too bad my wallet is a bit thin at the moment, but I'll check the albums out when I can.

I prefer Colors to be honest, the songs have better clean breaks and there weren't nearly enough jazz solos in TGM, I mean, the soloing all over that album is a little shoddy, especially when you compare it to say, the ending solo to White Walls on Colors Live, it doesn't get much better than that.

Cheers for that, except no about Paramore.

I like Paramore for the music, I could write essays on why they are good, but I'll choose not to unless you want.

While that may be true I think that the improvement in vocals make up for the solos not being at par with Colors. To be honest I preffer the clean breaks in TGM, but as I mentioned the whole album has a different feel from Colors, and the clean interludes are no exception.

Interesting, I'm a guitarist, so it disappointed me not to see epics like White Walls on this album, but I do enjoy TGM a lot.
