yes they should; that is to say, traditional sports are taken WAY too seriously and should be downgraded to starcraft tourney level...in fact several degrees lower.
This times infinity

If Chess and Darts can be called sports then there's no reason it can't apply to games too, there's just about as much physical input (if you're going to argue that games aren't physical enough) they're all games/sports that are more dependant on thinking and your hand-eye co-ordination.

Sports of all forms shouldn't be taken seriously at all to be fair (we'd all be better off without drunken football hooligans glassing you in the face because their team lost).

in Korea SC pro gamers get a lot of paparazzi harassment and fan harassment..and they end up marring their top models and pop icons..sounds pretty sweet to me..
That's actually depressing.

It's one thing to race cars competitively. But video games? Really?
If you think about it really, is the dedication some people give to their games any different than the dedication other people give to their sports? One person spends 12 hours a day on some game while the other spends 12 hours a day training for sports, it's pretty extreme in both cases.

And the skills required for some games... I mean something like Counterstrike tests your teamwork/communication skills, reaction times, precision and you have to form strategies. That's arguably a lot more than what goes into some traditional sports.

that is your personal opinion and i respect it..i`m not here to be a prick..but can u seriously hack mouses??do you seriously claim u can make mouses move the units for u better than u do it yourself??
I personally can't, but being involved in computers, I have to say I can't imagine the being no way to do it. I'm the one coming off as a dick to be honest, and I know it, so I wanna say right now that I'd like esports to be taken seriously, I just don't think they will, and that fact isn't for unreasonable reasons (bad English ftw)

Maybe my opinion on playing any video game in a competitive nature is coloring my opinion somewhat but I just don't see why anyone would enjoy it. Video games are, by default, something designed to unwind after a stressful day. Playing them competitively makes them that very stressful day they're designed to unwind after.
I hate competitive games too for that exact reason, but evidently others seem to love it.

It doesn't matter what people think, it is what they do.

The reason so many people enjoy sport is because it is a brilliant spectacle to them, this then gets turned into a moneyspinner. If any game/egame became attractive enough for spectating then it becomes as serious as a "traditional sport".

Personally I get bored watching people playing the majority of computer games.

Sports as an entertainment exist because the viewers want to get an experience out of it. It's all about the adrenaline and endorphins. If watching a sport didn't make the viewers body to release that stuff, no-one would be excited about any of it. This similar reaction can be achieved by playing computer games competitively aswell as observing competitive esports like starcraft.

As a simple example here's BreakyCPK commentating on top 10 Heroes of Newerth plays of the week: http://www.fileplay.net/channels/honcast/12894/honcast-top-10-plays-of-the-week-2-25-11

After you understand a competitive game like SC2, you understand how complex an challenging it can be and you become familiar with the competitive SC scene, (as an example) observing the games usually does cause a similar body reaction as observing a physical sport, that you are into, would.

Only reason for esports not being accepted on the same level as physical sports is the fanbase. Similarily many sport observers would say that "Hockey is the only real sport" or "Curling is not as real sport as soccer is." Competitive games require a huge amount of practice and training schedules before you can actually try to win competitive tournaments, just like physical sports so... Yeah I think that they should both be treated equal and I'm betting that popularity of competitive gaming will go up during this decade and it will go up fast.

And about that hacking and cheating on competitive esport games? Ever heard of bribe? Doping?

Yes.
I don't care for any kind of sport e- or not. But it is clear to me that "real" sport is a abitrary thing. Being good at soccer is no more usefull or no more an achievement than being good at starcraft. So why make a difference?
It is more useful becasue society has made it more useful. If you can make a living out of a skill, however arbitary or worthless some people judge it to be, then it clearly has value.

Sure, I take them seriously. But calling them "sports"? That's just stupid if you ask me.

Depends, are chess and the likes considered sports? If yes,it proves a sport doesn't need to involve any physical activity(please don't say thinking is a physical activity, you know very well what I mean),therefore,e-sports are real sports.

I take E-sports more seriously than "real sports". Like c'omon think of it like this: Lets put two teams of people run after a ball in order to kick it in to a net" Or "lets get two teams to run after a ball and to try trowing it in to a hoop" "Or lets try swing a ball with a crocked tire iron and try to get in to a hole behind grass, ponds and sand"... If Football and American football would be invented now they would be banned for being too violent.

I don't think any sport should be "taken seriously". My opinion is that all sports should be fun, not things you start punch ups and corporate scandals over.

Take it seriously? Yes, it is hard to do well.
Is it a sport? No! Of course not! You could smoke, be fat and diabetic and do just as well at it.
Darts, golf, poker, bowling, motor racing etc etc - I guess none of those are sports either, right? Sports only count when it's over-paid burly chaps running after balls - I see :p

OT yeah, there's no reason why video games should be taken less seriously than chess, which is just a board game. Sure, some are better suited than others for competitive, professional play - for example, you'd be hard pressed to find professional Hungry Hungry Hippos tournaments, just as you would struggle to find CnC 3 tournies or bejewelled professionals.

I'm happy with them retaining the 'e-sports' tag though, no desire to join the same bracket as the various ball sports.

Lets talk about Esports..Do you support them?..what is the future of Esports..obviously its a huge thing in Korea with Starcraft..a lot of European and American players are moving in Korea to have better conditions and earn more money..it used to be a big thing with CounterStrike back in the day..with the PGL..my favorite Esport and sport in general is Starcraft..and i do what i can to support the community and encourage Esports..whats your opinion?
There's heavy emphasis placed on the manliness of skilled athletes and that will never go away. It's a very human thing. But skilled individuals who can excel at games of any type can still gain fame. That fame shouldn't be restricted to games of physical skill.
