probly not because there are bound to be good screenplays and scritps that are floating around but most companys are going with what is safe not what would be cutting edge and good

Well I thought they really scraped the bottom of the barrel and went right through the the Earths crust when they announced a movie adaptation of 'Where the Wild things are'. It seems that if you right a book, no matter how slight, it will be made into a movie. Same with any comic book or Tv show or game.... ANYTHING but come up with original ideas. I'm still shaking my head that they bothered with a Mummy 3 to be honest, like anyone still gave a shit by then.
At the risk of sounding conceeded I feel the need to say that coming up with ideas is not hard and some really great talented directors out there can make something truly fantastic if they put their minds to it. Hell I like to think I can come up with good ideas, I'm a writer after all.
Incidentally I would recommend hitting the cinemas that aren't mainstream like lets say you live in Perth go to the Lunar of Cinema Paradiso as they play some great independant films. The best ones being anything under the brand of 'Madman studios'.

Someone needs to bring back Mystery Science Theatre in about 20 years so they can gleefully riff on all of these horrible films that are coming out now.

I think you mean ba dum tsh.
That's why I put drum roll in parentheses... in case I misspelled.

Wait, how can you misspell a sound?
You can misspell a sound when people agree on how to spell it. You wouldn't write "wuf" when talking about a dog woofing would you?

Almost every movie that's come out nowadays have either been based on a true story or based on a book. I think Public Enemies was even based on a book based on a true story. It's sad that not every movie can be as good as Hot Fuzz.

No they never will as long as Pixar still stands
I agree. Pixar has created some of the most original movies of this decade. They may not be the greatest, but I mean have you ever seen a movie anything like Up or Monsters Inc.?

They're not running out of ideas, just out of creative people. All the studios now go for the big budget action movies and don't allow any other ideas in. Its all about the money

I think they're running out of creative people, and it's their own fault. Lots of folks out there are full of great ideas, but they just can't get their ideas to anyone who could do something with them. Also, somebody keeps paying Michael Bay. He sucks. Stop paying him.

Yes. Case in point: Snakes on a Plane.
They took two die, put random animals on the one and random modes of transportation on the other, and ended up with the title. It didn't take much to make up the movie after that.
Just thank god it didn't end up being "Giraffes on a Bus" or "Lemurs on a Boat."

No.

You may think they are because Hollywood is built on blockbusters. Blockbusters obviously need high production values and oftentimes this means being a recognizable brand. However, look a little closer and you'll see that there are a number of more original movies. Avatar and District 9 are good examples of such films (both are to be released in the coming month if I'm not mistaken).
doesn't avatar come out in December?

It does, I guess I was mistaken ;)

Both of you are. The trailer said Summer 2010. Let me look it up.

OT: I kinda think so, though you really can't blame them. Not really...atleast...

EDIT:

According to the lovely Wikipedia, it states The Last Airbender will be released on July 2nd, 2010 in the United States, and in August for the UK.
