No, I believe that here in the US, we should only have five official holidays: Memorial and Labor Day, New Years Day, Presidents Day and the Fourth of July. Any other holiday should not recieve national recognition.
Martin Luther King day?
No MLK Day, no Christmas, no Thanksgiving, etc. I strongly believe that we have too many holidays. I don't have anything against them, I just believe that when you celebrate too many, they become less significant. For example, how many of you celebrated MLK day? How many of you celebrate St. Patricks day, etc, etc?

My point is that if we celebrate fewer holidays, we will in-turn celebrate them more and appreciate them more. Does that make any sense?

Well I'm glad you read what I posted because I wasn't talking about England, I was talking about the U.S.

I vote yes, I usually have St. Pat's off anyway. I can stand behind any holiday where I can wear annoyingly bright tints of green, get smashed, party and have some harmless fun with my ex. *sigh* Why do I give myself reasons to drink.

Personally I say no, just because people only use it as an excuse to get overly drunk and feel good about doing it. Honestly, do you really need an excuse to great drunk?

I won't lie to you, I'm not American, and don't fully understand what each holiday is for, and thought that Memorial Day was Veterans Day.

Why do Americans make such a big thing over St.Patricks day, I'm half irish and I don't think I've ever celebrated any thing to do with it.

Well, I think the main thrust of the argument is something like...

If for no other reason than because so many people need something they can call National Beer Day...
Yeah, that pretty much covers it.

They might as well be...when you get right down to it, one's for the living and one's for the dead.

Well St. Patrick's Day is a religious holiday (I assume so since it's about a saint) and thanks to the seperation of church and state, no it does not get to be a national holiday.

Ah I don't know. It seems unfair to have a national holiday for a patron saint of a different country and barely take notice of the one for your country, just for an excuse to go out and get pissed.

On the other hand, I like getting pissed. And I'll take a day off wherever I can get one.

.....why was I conflicted about this?
