I don?t know if the gamers who are angry at Microsoft are actually going to vote with their wallets.

I also don?t know how many non core gamers will react to the Xbox ones policy on used games, and having to log in every 24 hours.

I do think there not going to win this console generation, they might beat Nintendo, but they have simply alienated too many people to become the number 1 console this generation.

sorry for my poor english.

I think it will succeed because of all the casuals and fanboys. Casuals won't know any better until they buy it, and fanboys will buy it regardless. Then you have the group that are okay with Xbones DRM and policies, look at how many defense threads there are.

As much as I want to watch it crash and burn I doubt it will happen.

What I think and what I hope are two different things, in this case.

I hope the Xbox One fails. Because it represents all of the most backwards, money-grubbing irrational fears the gaming industry has toward its customers, all while showing zero respect for the people Microsoft expects to buy it.

Unfortunately, I think it's going to sell well. Not because of some nebulous "dudebro" demographic. Not because of screaming 12-year olds. Because of apathy. Sure, there will be people who buy it just because it's the new Xbox, and "Xbox rules, everything else sux!" That'll happen, and I won't be surprised if it's a fair amount of sales too. But other people are going to buy it because all of their friends bought it, because for the last eight years the Xbox has been the 'standard' for multi-player and cross-platform gaming, for some weird reason, so they're going to continue thinking that the Xbox One will hold the same standard. Other people are going to look at the 24-hour online check and think, "Well, I'm always online anyway, so it doesn't effect me!" and buy it. Because if it doesn't effect them, it's clearly not infringing on their rights as a consumer so why should they stand up for something on principle?

So yeah, I think it's going to sell well. And I think Microsoft knows that, which is why they're being so cocky and subsequently destroying their PR with sites such as this one, because they're going to see those week one sales and feel justified in all of the actions they've taken. And that makes me sad.

It will sell . But it will not meet microsofts expectation . My hope is that microsofts gamig devision takes a major hit , and they realise that what they did was wrong on many levels .

I think it'll sell okay. But it has, and will burn bridges with a lot of people, I think.

It'll do ok. Half the people out there, and on this site, screaming that it sucks and that the PS4 won will still most likely buy a XBone this year. I can still see a bunch of people actually being against it until Mircosoft becomes a little less fascist about it.

It'll sell okay. Not particularly well to gamers, but it'll sell. I can see folks with kids or teenagers picking it up.
My older cousin would probably get one to watch TV and have a console for his two boys.

It will probably do merely "okay" simply because of some people's loyalty to the console. I, however, do not see it becoming a roaring success. The damn console looks to be a $500 remote control with the ability to play games.

It may seem that the tide has shifted against the anti-consumer policies of the XBox One, but we're probably a vocal minority. And many of us are just gonna buy it anyways.

I think it will do ok unless:

The 24h drm check fails spectacularly and people will be unable to use their consoles on a regular basis (a la SimCity) for the first few weeks. The subsequent word of mouth will kill sales much beyond pre-orders.

Large publishing companies decide to remove support for used games before MS sells enough Xbones. I guarantee there is already a target console number once reached EA and other companies will suddenly limit support for used games. The embargo on used games will definitely hurt sales.

Assuming none of those things get screwed up, I suppose the system is going to do okay.

I think that, unfortunately, the XBone will do OK. I wish that weren't the case. I wish that consumers had enough of a backbone to say they don't need CoD or Halo or whatever so badly as to forfeit their rights as a consumer but I doubt that will happen. That said if M$ has a first month where they try to get cute and cut corners with their end of the bargain and people have validation issues like the first couple of weeks of Diablo III or SimCity then I foresee them having some serious problems both in terms of sales and in terms of lawsuits.

1. Will the Xbone fail to move units?
Absolutely not. They still have the "Halo Fanboys" which will always buy the console, regardless of the policies that Microsoft implements.

2. Will the Xbone have the console dominance they had with the Xbox360?
By all estimations, all signs point towards no. During the PS2/Xbox->PS3/X360 conversion, I saw a quite even split between Microsoft Xbone. This is just an observation, but I'm seeing a 80-90% of the Twitter comments, forum posts, conversations IRL and reviews leaning towards purchasing the PS4, rather than the Xbone.

3. Will the Xbone have Day 1 Purchase Lines?
I'm estimating a very "soft" Day 1 launch. You'll still have purchase lines in the "rich" areas of the world where everyone must get their spoiled kids the latest entertainment so they don't have to babysit their kids/deal with their spoiled bratishness, but the poorer areas may be more deserted, with very little Day 1 console movement. Populations with medium revenue but higher intelligence may see very low Day 1 console purchases (like Ivy League colleges, depending on the type of college), but regular colleges will see higher Day 1 console purchases (even some Ivy League, but more colleges that rely on Sports programs). Suburban areas with Stay at home parents, or the older population will probably not purchase the console for some time, so those areas will have shorter lines. Bottom line, you'll probably see shorter Purchase lines for the Xbone than you saw with the X360.

4. Will the console sell well enough to be "in the black"?
I think it will, only because they have future plans. If anything, we may see the Xbox Division sold to another company. Who would buy it, I have no idea. My money minded friend suggested Google, but I don't think Google wants to touch Microsoft's Xbone with a 10-ft pole, simply because Ouya, Bing, and the fact that the Xbone's architecture is such a closed interface (as opposed to the "mod and API our software" Google).

5. Will publishers/developers continue to make/sell games for the Xbone?
Probably. There's no stopping developers, but I think we'll start seeing Xbone Ports (porting from PC/PS4 version) rather than the Xbox being the "baseline game."

6. Will Indie developers actually make games for the Xbone?
Due to their policies, I believe Indie developers will avoid Xbone Development like the plague. High startup costs, difficult profit sharing policies, and stringent requirements on standards will shove away all but the "largest" indie developers (Minecraft).

The thing is, Microsoft expects to sell 400 million units.

There's just no way in hell that's ever gonna happen. It's available in only 21 country on launch. Which means in other countries it's all for PS4 to take. As for the 21 country it's available in, a lot of people will buy PS4 instead of Xbone. People that know about Xbone's issues will stay away. People who don't know anything will probably just go for the cheaper console. I mean, there are so many reasons for Xbone to fail and not a whole lot for it to be a success.

Ah, but the casuals who don't know any better will almost certainly go for the PS4. In the mind of the casual, the consoles are effectively equal. And all things equal they will go for the cheaper option every time, as they should. I mean, if gaming is not that important to you why would you pay $100 extra for a gaming console unless there is an important reason too?

I want them to crash and burn. But I know that is not going to happen. Why? Because there are thousands of spoiled brats out there that will not give a damn about the DRM and Internet connection. As long as they get the next CoD so they can play it online and scream into the microphone when they get headshotted by a sniper across the map.

Do you have a source for that? I know that usually sounds snarky but I really mean that in the nicest way. I will be seriously entertained by them saying the want to sell 2.66 as many units as the PS2, a console that was being sold for 13 years.
I don't remember where the article was that I saw that, but I did see the original article with the 400 million units claim. Unless I'm mistaken though, they were talking about 400 million sales of all next gen consoles, not just Xbox One. Even that would be fairly absurd though since the last two generations, while selling in the hundreds of millions, aren't close to 400 million. I don't expect the totals to almost double all of a sudden when the console market has never really had growth of that kind ever.

As for the question of will the Xbox One succeed: it will probably sell decently at least since there are a lot of uninformed customers out there. But does it deserve to succeed? Absolutely not.

Ya, I can tell you right now that 6 out of 10 of my friends are switching, and the other 4 are merely undecided. This is basically how we feel about Microsoft:

I'd imagine it's going to get a decent amount of sales, but PS4 will likely still be the "winner" by a wide margin. The way I've read the situation is that PS2 was the best console of it's generation, then Sony got too big for it's britches with the PS3 and it didn't do as well as it's competition. It still sold a fairly well, but the 360 beat it out in the end.

Now here we are, Microsoft had the more popular console of this generation, and now it seems they're trying to get too big for their britches with the XBone. Just like the PS3 before it, it'll definitely sell its fair share, but the PS4 is looking to have all the momentum going into the launch.

I do think that the PS4 is going to win this generation (if you exclude PC gaming, as I myself am considering finally making that jump). I know a LOT of people - my brother included - who bought a PS3, played it for a month or two, then said "fuck this" and traded it in towards buying a 360. I can't help but imagine that the same thing will happen with the XBone, and I'd be very interested to see the trade-in numbers of people taking their XBones back within the first few months.

One thing I do know is that a lot of my "casual gamer" friends have at the very least heard about how creepy the Kinect is going to be and that alone is enough to make them wary of the XBone, if not out-right scared off by it. And really, I wouldn't be so certain that casual gamers are completely uninformed about what MS has been up to recently. I got a text message this morning from my oldest brother quoting the MS line of "We do have an offline console, it's call the 360." If my oldest brother knows about this (a guy that's already grown up and has a professional career) then I'd imagine a lot of other people we might think would be uninformed about this actually have heard about it.

I also predict that a few months down the line, MS will release a stripped-down XBone that, at the very least, doesn't require Kinect. Seems like a lot of the other issues are things that could only be fixed by a complete redesign, so I doubt they'll ever release a version with everything people are complaining about removed. Quite the contrary, in fact, as every statement that MS has put out regarding these concerns equates to "That's the way it's going to work and we're sticking to it. Don't like it? Fine. We don't want your money anyways."
