I am going to make a very shocking announcement here. I actually believe... Heh heh, sorry I just could not finish that sentence with a straight face. No,I do not believe this or any other doomsday theory. And even if I did, frankly I wouldn't worry about it. Any catastrophe that could possibly end all life as we know it on this planet would likely be out of our control and completely unpredictable, so as far as I'm concerned I'll cross that bridge when I come to it. For now, life as usual.

Assuming the construction of my lunar nuclear weapons facility carries on at the current rate, yes, yes I do think we will all die around then.

Well, you guys will anyway.

The Mayan calender never accounted for leap years.

So if we're really going by the Mayan calender, the world should have ended about seven months ago.

I only found this out yesterday. And considering the topic...it fits.

http://jollyjack.deviantart.com/journal/Doomsday-sorry-you-missed-it-288780217

If you don't want to click on the link here's the text copy and pasted:

Since the concept of the Leap Year was first implemented back in 45BC, there have been about 514 of them.
Without the extra day every 4 years, we would be in 2013.

As the Mayan Calendar doesn't take leap years into account; 2012 has been and gone.

(Edit - no: I'm not smart enough to work that out myself. I read it!)

Edit: saw the post above me glad other people beat me to it. So yeah by Mayan reckoning. 2012 has passed and we're in 2013. So yeah...no doomsday NO DOOMSDAY FOR YOU!

Each and every year, my calendars finish on the 31st December, Year X. And each and every time, the world has failed to end on the 31st December, Year X.

So no, I don't believe that another calendar ending is a sign that the world will end.

Not sure if this is true or not, but I've heard the Mayan calender didn't take leap years into account, and in fact it ended a few years ago.
Either way, no, I don't think the world is going to end
EDIT: Damn ninjas

Come December I'm going to bury the world....in cupcakes.
Yes. Cupcakes.

And when you have all perished, the porpoises will ascend from the oceans to claim the land; first the bays, then the Starbucks, and only when they have claimed all, I shall depart...to my fishing cabin near Canada.

Because making all these deadly cupcakes is hard work, you know?

******

And that rambling nonsense above should tell you how seriously I am willing to take this whole "World ends in 2012" business.

Number one: It's not a doomsday prophecy, the Mayans were just wiped out before they could get around to expanding the calender.

Number two: The Mayans never included leap years in their calenders. Technically the world should have ended in the ballpark of seven months ago last year.

Number three: Even IF the above were not true, Why in the HELL would I pay any heed to a doomsday prophecy from a group of people that never saw their own coming?

I'm not discounting the probability that we will be wiped out in a sudden cosmic event that quietly fades us away as the universe in it's infinite machinations continues unperturbed, but there's no higher chance of that happening in December than any other time of the year.

Three points:

1) Gregorian/Julian Calendar.
2) 2012 was the REBIRTH, not the DEATH.
3) Doomsday Cults have been predicting the end of the world since Biblical times.

The 4th point is a bit redundant, but do you really think this is the first time we've had someone mention the 2012 problem; given there's been a film about it?

If my henchmen go follow the plan, then yes YOU all are going to die as I sit comfortably in my lunar-death-ray-space-station, conversing with my Nazi neighbors from down the crater about Chicken Soup for the Fascist Soul.

I can't see why you'd think that just because someone's calender ended means the world ends.

Yes. Because for an unknown reason I get some perverse satisfaction when the bars in any poll are 50/50.

I just need 170 other people to agree with me...

Don't know i this has been said already, but my friend sent me this on facebook 29th last month

"Caesar created leap years in 45BC, if he had not today would be july 28th 2013. The Mayan calendar does not include Leap Years. The world should have ended 7 months ago should the mayans be believed."

So, I have my doubts.
