Usagi Drop might be worth checking out.

It's almost tranquil in pace, and the artwork is fairly primitive, but the story seems worthwhile enough so far, despite slice-of-life generally not being my thing. Although maybe I'm just impressed by the fact that, contrary to one of the more annoying anime staples, it has as a main character a small girl that actually act the part, rather than being some diminutive precocious porn star in disguise.
I've got the first few episodes of that though my backlog seems to be mounting... Still haven't finished Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko (weird series...).
...I don't know whether it's speaks good or ill of me and my taste that I read the plot description, and thought "that doesn't sound particularly weird to me".

But yes, I'd certainly assume that speaking Japanese isn't too good for one's backlog. Though I can barely keep up myself, particularly since I'd like to play through Cross+Channel [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.266586-Deskimus-Prime-Dives-into-Cross-Channel] as well.

Usagi Drop sounds to be quite serious (at its core, anyway) as it addresses a vague part of Japanese societal norms, so even if I don't watch it now, I'm definitely getting all the episodes.
"Light-hearted treatment of serious themes" is indeed the vibe it gives off. Though I've heard some strong complaints about the ending of the manga, so we'll see whether it holds up.

Like said before 'Otaku' is more a label than an insult. I recognize myself as an Otaku, in the form of loving Anime and Manga.

Strong Fan of it, will probably continue to be.

P.S.: Look at my avatar.

I mostly just read manga...and yes the hard-copies only as reading manga online hurts my eyes for some reason. yeah it's cost more than i'd like but w/e.

Not so much into anime for whatever reason. I just prefer the usually faster pace of manga, with my current favorites right now being Death Note and Eyeshield 21. although Naruto holds a special place in my heart for introducing me to manga. (p.s. if anyone wants to suggest any good manga feel free to either reply or pm me)

Also just because you asked no I don't consider myself an Otaku.

I haven't watched too much anime, but thanks to an app on my iPod I read tons of manga (iManga X).

In fact, my avatar is from a manga I read.

Wow, didn't expect so many anime aficionados.

As for me, yes I do, but I'm very selective (FMA, Perfect Blue, etc). As I'm with everything else.

I've read plenty of manga and watched plenty of anime in the past. Although to be honest, I haven't read manga in years and excluding me finishing up FMA Brotherhood just today I haven't watched much anime lately. It's probably because all the series that I did like either aren't making anymore episodes or they've been dragged out to the point where I don't like them anymore (Naruto, One Piece, Bleach). Plus they haven't really made any new Gundam animes lately so...

I don't read much manga/watch much anime as I'd like. At the moment, I'm watching no anime and reading Naruto (I also was reading Bleach but it just grew too god damn boring since nothing was happening for so many chapters).

I think that if this question was asked anywhere else than on a teenage gamer forum, the results would be very different.

yes but also Western animation/comic like the Boondocks and Scott Pilgrim.
I mostly watch Mech,s and pretty much hate moe shows (although I get the appeal of Lucky Star it poking fun at the Anime fan subculture) and I avoid long-running shows (as in 200+ eps with no end in sight like Naruto and Bleach (I know Naruto "ended" but I also count Shippuden)
also I hate some parts of the fandom (like Weeabo,s or Wapanese)

Yup, both. I usually prefer the manga, but the really good stuff rarely gets an official translation. My knowledge of kanji (and Japanese in general) is too limited to import anything without furigana and I hate reading on a computer, so that makes things harder.

Probably wouldn't use the terms "otaku" or "weeaboo" to describe myself, though. I have relatively specific tastes and interests. The fact of the matter is that there are stories and styles in anime and manga that you just wouldn't see in any other medium... although I do indulge myself with shows about cute girls doing cute things in a cute way. In my opinion, those definitions come down to attitude.

If you run around yelling things in broken Japanese and start buying into things simply because they're from Japan, then yes; You're a "weeaboo". If you violently defend a show, act like a creepy, obsessive weirdo and hate voice actresses because they're married, then yes; You're an otaku. If you just watch the shows/read the books and don't bother anyone, then you're a completely normal human being.

It's a shame that those other categories are what (some) people associate with Western fans of Japanese media. Why be so narrow-minded? Then again, it's a shame that people associate Islam with terrorism and sex with evil. There are bigger things to worry about.

Yes, though mainly an anime fan. Though unfortunately, fewer and fewer series are actually any good these days...
Give Hourou Musuko (a.k.a. Wandering Son) a try.

Easily the best TV anime I've seen in a very long time. The first two-three episodes will be a little confusing if you haven't read the manga (which is also fantastic, btw), but you'll catch on pretty fast. Despite some of the more sensitive themes it brings up (transgenderism, sexuality), it manages to completely avoid being a trite, "topical" series or fetishizing the characters at all.

They printed the first localized volume of the manga in a beautiful hardcover copy recently too.

I have an account on MyAnimeList, and I draw in an anime style.

Yes, I'm a hardcore anime fan. I wear the name "Otaku" proudly like a badge of honor.

<------------- That avatar is from an anime. A good one too.
I used to be more interested in manga, but lately I've been watching a lot more anime.
Currently watching Neon Genesis Evangelion, and liking it so far.

When I posted my first reply, I thought to myself that Hourou Musuko was easily the best series from the first half of this year. At first, when I read up on the premise I was like... 'nah, not my cup of tea', but I watched it and... 'damn, this is very well done.' And on ANN, it's only the third series that I've given a 10/10 score for (and I've rated about two hundred series on that website). It is perhaps a little too intelligent, but you really need it to be able to deal with such subject material, and the artistry matched the story to a tee (subtle soundtrack included, loved the outro). But question: 11 episodes?!?!
