Wow already over 130 votes! Holy shait!

So, it definitely seems that a funny commentary is needed to be a good let's play. Are you guys more interested in funny sounding people? People with just random things to say? People who freak out (obviously it's funny in scary games)?

Another question: Where do you usually go to find Let's Play series? Is YouTube your main place of inquiry? Or is there specific sites dedicated to it you like?

Only one at the moment, which is of Minecraft. Which I discovered via a user posting on these forums. I also sometimes use LP's if I'm stuck in a game.

Definitely. I am following the Yogscast LP of Minecraft (it's on BlueXephos's channel) All the "quests" and "NPCs" are obviously fake, but it is still funny as hell.

I watch LP's if they're funny.

Case in point, Dildobitch's LP of Amnesia.

I took turns screaming and crying (half the time with laughter).

So like the title says, do you like to watch YouTube (or other) videos going through a game?

If you do, why? Do you use it like a review, or because you can't/don't want to buy the game?

And if not, why?

Personally I do not, because if I like a game I'd rather just buy it and experience it myself. However, I'm debating starting to record gameplay and posting it after a bit of editing for whatever the next game I buy is.
I do. Watching a 'let's play' with commentary (from someone suitably witty and with a soothing, slightly arousing accent) is a far better review than any ctritic - most notably I see the gameplay in action.

Yeah. I love most of the stuff supported or originating from Something Awful.

The "Treasure Master" series by KhadBanks was great.

Also, Proton_Jon's stuff is cool, especially his plays of fan made Mario mods.

Minecraft could be used to make a really interesting Text/Screenshot LP about one lone man's descent into madness after being abandoned in an unfamiliar world. I really hope somebody does that in the future.

If they're funny, then yes. I'm partial to Minecraft and horror game Let's Plays, since the former is just awesome and both allow for lots of screaming and horrible deaths.

Yes, all the time. In the end they are the best way to get a review of the game so that was the main reason I started watching them, and still is the biggest reason. And other great thing about them is watching a game you liked, commentated it can really be fun. If the commentator are really great watching a terrible game can be fun but only if the commentator know who to keep you entertained.

Why the hell would I watch someone else playing the game? That's boring, I'd rather, you know, have fun playing the game myself.
This is my excuse for not watching them. I'd rather play a game, than watching someone else play it.

The majority of my time on YouTube is used on Let's Plays.

I would get back into LPing myself [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_MWFcQCtyf8], but I don't have a proper tripod for my camera, and I don't feel like going back into paying to use Jing. (I know that non-screencap is for the most part frowned upon, but it worked for the Heartless [http://www.youtube.com/user/666theheartless666], so I figure I can give it a shot and maybe do it right.)

I ocassionally watch (non-narrated) LPs of console exclusives I'm curious about or games who's stories interest me but are in genres I dislike. MGS4 was interesting if bizarre viewing (over the course of several days I hasten to add) and God of War 3 is actually very watchable, almost as a movie if you skip the occassional over extended minion fight.

I usually avoid LPs with a narration, because most of the time the narrator isn't nearly as interesting or funny as he/she thinks they are, with the exception of one really great Minecraft LP:

Follow LPs, yes.

But not YouTube LPs. The broad majority of those are fuckawful.

If you're going to do one at least put some effort into it.

Yes. Especially entertaining when things screw up and the commentator gets angry - TheSpoonyOne's LP of SWAT 4 come to mind (YOU FOOL!), or this LP of Sonic the Hedgehog 2006 [http://lparchive.org/Sonic-The-Hedgehog-2006/].
"One fish, two fish, red fish - oh my God, what?"

My favourite has to be 666theheartless666. Hilarious. Also dan & lithuaniandad's LPs. They have to be funny, at which point it becomes less like a boring review of something you could be playing and more like a rifftrax with interactive hecklers. Especially when they suck at it.
