Portal 2 isn't M. The list goes on.

A -LOT- of -great- games don't involve the spilling of gore.
People who think otherwise are pretty immature in my opinion.

That isn't to say M-games aren't fun, too, though. They're both fun, E through M rated games.

Of course not.
There is more than one way for something to be enjoyable. Sometimes I want something deep and thought provoking and that is enjoyable. Sometimes I want something stupidly immature where I can just turn my brain off and kill shit with loads of gore and swearing that no child should ever play. Sometimes I want something dark and gritty and ?realistic?. Sometimes I want something lite and happy and without gore or you're supposed "mature" content.
The age rating is irrelevent on a game.

First of all, I'm 21, I drink, I get laid with my girlfriend, and I will rather play Ratchet and Clank: A Crack in Time over and CoD game every day.

Now, your friend needs to pull his head out of his ass. There are grown men who play pokemon. I seriously think there is no shame in playing an E rated game. We just enjoy it. M games are cool and all, but when you look at the situation it is about taste. But if he starts calling you on what is a child's toy, tell him to grow a pair and play.

Dear God NO! Mature games can be enjoyable at times, and can delve into some important areas and traverse interesting themes.

That doesn't mean they are more enjoyable than all of the things I can do in games like Just Cause 2, Magicka, Saints Row 2, and all the others that aren't on the top off my head.

For me it does. I really really dislike playing "T" shooters. It kills the immersion for me when I spray a 50 cal into a guy and he is not a bloody pulp, or when a bunch of soldiers start yelling out "we gotta get the heck outta here!"
At that point the immersion dies and I quickly fade back to reality where I am a poor college student playing another generic medal of honor clone killing Nazis/Russians/generic aliens, the list goes on.

For other games it honestly does not matter to me. I loved all kinds of games that were not mature, but it was because they had an art style to match.

Poll: Validate my opinion, Escapist!

Seriously, nobody is going to vote "yes" unless it's to spite you.

[sub]I mean, I agree, it's just that this is kind of a no-brainer. You might as well make a poll called "ARE PUPPIES AND KITTENS ADORABLE?".[/sub]
THEY ARE! what did I win?

OT: of course not, and the fact that he refused to try and play it invalidates his opinion (you cant have a real opinion about a game unless you have personal experience with it)

This is just one of those things that you don't need to ask. If you honestly had a thought cross your mind that said "this isn't gritty enough for me to enjoy", then I would... well, I basically have no respect for those kinds of people.

The real question is why ask in the first place?

Of course a game doesn't have to be mature to be good. Few games are, anyway. Hell, even Heavy Rain, with all of its drama and sad scenes has some pretty silly stuff in there...

Oh I thought by mature you meant mature and not rated M.
Ratings don't matter. Actual maturity can help but it doesn't make the game.

Jet Set Radio would say no. Tagging a giant death machine with graffiti: Mature? No. Awesome/Fun? Hell yeah.

I'll say this much.

I'll always enjoy a Kirby game more than the latest flavor of Popular Shoot-Their-Face Game. Always.

Your friend sounds lame. The only possible concession I could make for his viewpoint is that a game shouldn't handicap itself in order to get a more marketable rating.

That said, for the sake of brainstorming, rated M:
Portal = Chell is naked and most surfaces a reflective
Kirby = swears more than Samuel L. Jackson
Mario = Grinds his boots into Goombas after stomping. Extra blood spatter.
Pokemon = WTF Japan?

I think you ought to help your friend remove his head from his anus. It sounds like it's lodged in there pretty well.

My former roommate insisted that unless it's Zelda, no game can sell if it's not rated Mature. I'm glad he was a film major instead of a game dev major like myself.

No, a game needs to be fun and well-crafted to be good. An M rating is unnecessary unless the story you want to tell requires those elements. M isn't a goal, it's a warning label for parents. Just make a game, make it good, make it fun, and make it uniquely yours.

I'm actually more weary about games that have gotten a Mature rating. Many people will praise a game for it's Mature rating because it's "Gritty and Realistic" which half the time I've found to mean "Unnecessarily sexualized with lots of cuss words". Sexualization and cussing have their place, as do gore and gratuitous amounts of violence. They are all great things. But like anything they are tools to a story and they must be utilized properly. The average dullard just sees the tools and doesn't care about how they've been used to create the product. It's like a little kid who eyes with wonder that no nudity sex scene in a movie, or says "COOL!" just because some guy got his head blown off. The things that make a game Mature when put in the wrong context actually make it more kiddie to me then actual kiddie games. It's people looking for the spectacle and ignoring the relation to the work as a whole, just like that little kid who is amazed by something deemed "Mature" when it's nothing special.

"Kiddie" games as one might call them (Anything with T or below) can't rely on overt sexualization or cussing or anything like that to set up drama and bring appeal to a character. They have to rely on other tools to bring out better characterization and plots. It's this crutch that can actually give them better stories then many Mature rated games. Mature games usually are quite shallow and vapid, which to me makes them have less appeal then the kiddie gamse that at least has a better excuse for horrible characters and plot.

Metroid laughs at you.

Honestly, it's all about setting. Besides, T games can have blood and some language. There's an acceptable limit after which it slips over into M that actually can be just like an M title but without the sticker. Some devs though seem to think their games won't sell if they don't have a big bold diagonal M on the cover.

Also, if I may add, while a sex scene can further the plot, having to work harder at portraying romance because you can't just make them f*** in the third act can make the story much more moving because you have to show love in the place of animal lust.
