excessive and needless amounts, like kill bill levels where everyone has high blood pressure and it just look silly, make games suck a bit for me.

I don't mind blood, in fact it can be a welcome change from bean bag enemies. However going overboard for me is just as bad as completely forgetting it.

Doesn't make the game any better at all - it's just a nice touch to have to show you are hurting what you're hitting/shooting

Granted some games where you do something gory first time will get the reaction "ohhh hell yeah!" but after that it's the same thing again and again.

yes, like I voted in the poll, gore isn't necessary to enjoy a game, but it's a cool bonus, like the first time I blew some locusts head with the sniper rifle, it felt so satisfying...

I never see gore as an actual merit in its own right. It can be an aid to immersion in the right game (for example, while I consider the uncensored version of Left 4 Dead 2 to be honestly excessively gory, the total removal of gore from the censored Australian version SIGNIFICANTLY affected the game in a negative manner by kicking the game's sense of immersion in the ass) but I don't consider gore to ever be a reason to buy a game. In fact, I find ludicrously excessive, gleefully juvenile levels of gore to be a minus, because they're usually covering up for something- like the fact that the actual GAME sucks. Even if they're not, I feel like my intelligence is being insulted. "Look! MORE BLOOD! See, isn't this game SO MUCH MORE AWESOME now?"

Well I can say the level of gore has seriously affected how much I've enjoyed L4D2 considering the game already slows down when looking at big, expansive areas, but then the biker-helmet gore splattering just kills my processor at times.
As for what is probably on topic, I'm not too concerned with gore. There is a part inside of me that does giggle and get juvenilly excited when I see the gore, but most of the time I don't give enough time to focus on it. I prefer acts of hilariously overdone cartoon violence a la: Smash Bros., Nippon Ichi games, etc.

in Prototype, it made the game much more realistic (for as far as having blade arms and flying can be realistic...) also, shooters and games like prototype/gta/every other violent game are not convincing if you would not see blood after you you make someones brains splash out the back of their heads with a shotgun...

If it's used appropriately, it works. Take MadWorld and Mortal Kombat-both are supposed to be over the top, slice and dice games and without the blood, they wouldn't be nearly as memorable. The gore plays a big role in the comedy of MadWorld and is essential to the games enjoyment.

The same can be said of Resident Evil and Left 4 Dead-these games are meant to be taken seriously and while bits of it aren't massivley realistic, the game tries to be as disturbing as possible-and gore healps it accomplish that. This is why me and every single other Australian gamer was so pissed off when L4D2 was censored-the game is supposed to be played with the blood on. When zombies get shot and cut to pieces, they bleed a lot-removing that from the game for no other reason then to protect all the 8 year olds the government thinks the game is marketed to destroys the sense of immersion.

Fuck, I hate this terrible government...

There's very few games that do it well. Most of the time it's just a puff of blood that appears whenever your bullets impact organic material. And when more than that, it's almost always disproportionate to how much the enemy whose blood you've splattered everywhere is actually injured.
That said, it's silly when you shoot bad guys and they don't bleed.

I actually liked the exploding heads from Gears of War and Fallout, though. Satisfying.

I don't need it per se, but I'm pretty used to it these days, so if there was absolutely no gore it would feel wrong at this point.

I like games with a lot of gore, but I play both. That being said I think there are too many ultra violent games out there. It'd be nice if we had more games that were more clever about it. In most books or movies the main character won't kill nearly as much as video game characters if they do at all.

There are a couple of games were it's really unnecessary, like the Prince of Persia: Warrior Within.
